No blooms on Spicebush

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

I planted two spicebushes (Lindera benzoin) about three years ago and so far they are growing slowly (about 4 1/2 ft tall), but no flowers. Do they take a few years to flower?

Ours usually start blooming at about that size. Like they say, wait 'til next year!

:-) Thanks Guy. I guess at this point that's my only option anyway! Not sure why it never occurred to me when I bought them that it could be a few years even for flowers.

I'm hoping when they do flower that I have a male and a female...

They come very easily from seed. Find some seeds this fall and supplement your planting to increase the odds of having both genders. If you can't find a local source, drive down here (near Springfield) for one of our fall arboretum tours and we'll load up a seed bag for you. Send me a D-Mail if you want to know tour dates and registration info.

Thanks for the suggestion Guy, I'll try to get hold of some seed. I had a hard time finding the plant 3 years ago when I bought them, so I'll let you know how I do. BTW, any ideas why one would have yellowing leaves? Soil nutrients, maybe? It was looking really happy until about 3 weeks ago...

Seeds are easy to come by. Lindera is everywhere in the understory along creeks & hollows here on the farm. I've got a yellow/orange-fruited specimen that I spotted and flagged last fall, but don't know if its female offspring will come true, or if it'll spawn a mix of red and yellow fruited progeny.
If anyone is interested in growing some out, remind me this fall and I'll collect fruit/seeds for you.

Lucky, those seeds you sent have germinated and look healthy. We'll see what happens with the fruit color in a few years if I don't manage to kill them first!

I finally planted what I had left in a pot; any that survive the summer will be lined out in a nursery bed this fall.
