Trouble on the Birch tree

Ijamsville, MD(Zone 6b)

Does anyone know what this might be? Some of the leaves are yellowed, curled up and have crumbly white granules inside and some look like this. Some kind of mildew?

Thank you!

Probably woolly aphids. At least that's what the pic looks like, and they're pretty common on river birch. Blast most of them off with the water hose, or try one of those non-toxic insecticidal soaps.

I just looked up wooly aphids and I don't think that is what I have. Those are sorta puffy with squiggles and my trouble is more like a coating. Now I learned a new aphid! Thanks

I dunno then -- I thought I could see a few of them, especially on the left leaf. They look like puffy lumps, and they leave their woolly litter everywhere, I suppose to distract predators. They also make the leaves curl and yellow, which you mentioned.

Well, I went back down to the tree and picked some of the curled leaves with white stuff on them. Maybe they are wooly aphids. They are not moving but have little brown dots under the 'wool' This is the best picture I could get. We decided to spray the tree. Thanks Guy!
