I've gone back a year in the posts and don't see where this has been discussed. I am looking for at least one Blood Orange and one Mandarin Orange variety for my yard. Does anyone have recommendations? I live near Corona, an excellent citrus growing area. I already have oranges, grapefruit, lemon and lime mature trees.
I went to the UCR Citrus Station's Open House a few weeks ago and got to taste around 40 varieties of citrus. (that was fun!) I took notes, so I can compare what I wrote with what any recommendations here.

Blood/Mandarin Orange Varieties
Hi Barb,
I found a blood orange at Home Depot two weeks ago.. also, you can let the garden managers at Lowes and HD to order some and they will.. They've done that several times for me. You should see the tiny orange on there now..it looks so strange. It is still in the pot.

I have a Moro blood orange (on dwarfing rootstock). It has done well, although was slow (several years?) to reach the "leaping" stage and first several crops were small in size and number. Now I love it.
~'spin!~
The Moro is a great variety and actually has more flavor than the Tarocco [sp?], but hands down, the best mandarin around is the Owari Satsuma Mandarin.......seedless, sweet, easy peeling, and YUM!
best of luck in your search coronabarb,

All I know about blood oranges is that Moro is the variety that comes out of San Diego and it's supposed to have a hint of raspberry. I would ask the new tree I have potted out on my balcony, but it's not talking to me. Refuses to even grow a new leaf. I'm hoping it's just sulking because of the heat we've had. It looks exactly like when I bought it.
I had an orange tree at one point and it grew VERY slowly. I honestly don't think it grew at all in the three years I had it (still gave me flowers even though it didn't grow, no fruit though but I think it was a pollination issue). So as long as it's looking healthy and not shrivelling up or turning brown or something I wouldn't worry about it!
I grow satsuma tangerine in orange co next door to you and it works great. They are seedless which is a big plus.
I have an Owari Satsuma mandarin (tangerine). It's Heaven.

Seedless is a good thing! I'll have to start a search for a tree to plant as soon as the Santa Anas are over.
Try " Four Winds Growers" They have a great selection, quality trees, and they answer questions like yours via email.
