Azealas

Ocean Springs, MS(Zone 9a)

Is it really too late to prune azealas now? I have several that look really bad and I would like to shape them up some.

Thanks for all your help.

I usually trim mine right after they get finished flowering. So i'm assured flowers next year. I don't know if they have set the new buds yet or not. Maybe someone else will know.

The rule of thumb up here is to prune no later than the Fourth of July. I suspect you could extend that date down where you are.

Thanks for the help. They are getting pruned now. They just do not look like I want them to look.

I wish mine grew enough to prune - they only grow 3-4 inches a year here.

In Texas they set buds in August. I have a question, too. How long do Azaleas live? I have had mine eighteen years and some of them have died recently. The ones that are living are getting scragly looking. I don't know if it was due to our dry spell this spring or if they are just getting too old.

Some of mine were planted when the house was built in '73, and others were already here before that.

dbibb,
The azaleas will bloom on the new growth next year. I am in upstate SC. It is July 8th and I still have several to cut back. The previous owners planted a type that grows huge right up next to the house and front porch so I prune every year. I usually do it as soon as they finish blooming but could not do that this year. At any rate, I have pruned later than this and they have still bloomed profusely. They are very old, well established plants. This will be my last year for pruning them. I am getting as many cutting off then as I can and then out they come. They are far too large to be within 18 inches of the house. At any rate, I would think that you would have no problem with them blooming since your growing season is a little longer than mine.

MollieB...Thanks.

Due to the heat back in June, they did not get pruned back. But it has been cooler here now and since you've told me this, they will get it.

I know what you mean about the heat! We have had either heat or rain (which we desparately need) but it is one reason I am running late this year.
