June 8th Austin Nursery Tour Pics

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

fantastic vultures....hehehehe.

Pride of Barbados is a beautiful plant. They have planted it all over at work and it has been blooming since spring. great addition for any garden I think. Ampy you will have to post a pic. Ladies when you get them in the ground let us see um.

I, lately, have undergone the tedious task of digging through my solid rock back yard to add a white crepe myrtle I purchased at half-off. I need or should i say my veggie garden needs a little more shade. Poor plants are getting burned. Have to water almost daily to keep them cool. My hand pick axe I think is about to wear out on me. Almost got the hole twice the size of the root ball. I think I am going to stop there and fill with dirt then plant the crepe raised that should give the roots more room to grow. Alot of labor I tell you, 2 weeks worth of digging to get where I am.

Tanya and the kiddos leave for Miss. this Monday. That frees me up for visiting and gardening. Connie you up for receiving more plants. everything I've been babysitting has multiplied aleast once some twice. I would like to come to Austin and visit any one available for a visitor.? I am free on either wed. or thurs. morning or wed. afternoon.

Hey Calvin, Welcome to my world. I wore out 3 pick-axe's and am working on a 90 lb.rockbar. Isn't it FUN????? I tell you what, though, when we're done, we'll be proud parents of the garden. It's been slow going, hard deliberate work, but I keep telling myself "I'm building bone"... Work never killed anyone, so said my Grandpa. Yea, right.
I just planted a crepe, too, and the hole was 4' wide/2'deep. So,ya got my sympathy.

hey Hag49,

How is the crepe doing now. I have my hole sitting at about 1&half feet deep and 2 feet wide. I would like to stop the digging and get on with the planting.

Calvin, it's still in transplant shock. IT's beastly hot here (98-103) so just staying alive is a great thing. I think it will be fine. It's really hard to kill a crepe. I ripped one out one yr. and just threw it aside for the night, then the next day decided to go ahead and transplant it. It did fabulous from the neglect. go figure. I baby some things and they still don't make it. Yours will be fine, I'm sure. Hilary

Hi Calvin,

I just got back from Lubbock for 5 days and then Houston for 2!! It's now Monday night. I have a friend whose mother died about 2 weeks ago and we're going to give her a potted plant and take her out to dinner on Wed, but I'm pretty sure I'll be here most of the day! Does anyone want to do an impromptu, quick nursery tour since Calvin has time off and wants to talk plants??? I'd love to go to one on Lamar that I've heard of but never been to. Any suggestions?? Sandi...Michelle...where are y'all??? :)

Calvin,

Looks like everyone is gone! Unless you can make contact with them, I guess our little Impromptu NT fizzled out! So sorry....I know you wanted something "plant-driven" to do on your time off!!

WOW, where did everyone go? I am only assuming (you know what that leads to...........A.. out of you and me) that ya'll hve found other threads and are keeping up with them and letting this one go.

If you touch back here How are you doing?

Me and the family are fine. School starts in about 1 week and I am looking forward to returning to school. Work is unenjoyable and looking forward to leaving it in about 3-4years. AFter Graduation.

Tomatoholic----- You should be going to or returning from CHina......YES?

Calvin....you are right....no one visits here anymore because no one posts on it...haha

Have you tried the "Coffee" thread on the Texas Gardening forum that I started? That's where most of us are posting about what we're doing. That way it opens it up to other people from the area.

I start school on Thursday.....I'm ready for it!! I'm bored with staying at home!!

Sorry about work being unenjoyable....can you just "mentally" plan garden things....think about plants you want to buy....that sort of thing....and then just enjoy your family and studies instead? I know it's hard...easier said than done....

Did you plant your fig tree? I just got a hand-made jar of jam from the friend that is strawberry/fig combo! I just got it today...not opened yet...but Rosemary who made it said their fig tree is as large as a living room!!!

DH and I adopted a year-old cat a week ago...here he is...very strong-willed but smart and little trouble.

hey Connie,

tried the coffee thread but kept missing the early bird time. I get off work and it is the most opportune time but when I get home I start the watering thing and garden work and sreaming and such and lose track of the time then,,, lalalalalalala,..... i'm rambling, forgive?

I will keep trying the coffee thread

Hey y'all, I've been in Oklahoma for a family reunion. Nope...we do not go to China until next year sometime to get our daughter. Chinese gov't is terribly behind for various reasons. So we are delayed until next year. :( Here is our blog if you want to get updates, you can put your email address in at the bottom and hit sumit. http://baby.omega71.com

Connie, that is a gorgeous kitty. What is his/her name? I love cats!!Well, all animals, but I'm partial to kitties.

I'll check out the coffee thread later...I have tons of stuff to do since I"ve been gone a week.
