Need advice on pruning a yew bush

Toledo, OH(Zone 6a)

This thing is huge and I would remove it if I could, but it is not my decision! I can prune it as long as I don't kill it! Advice please! When to do it, how much can I safely cut back, any other advice????? Thanks in advance!

Illinois, IL(Zone 5b)

Yews naturally grow intop small trees and live forever. Would it work as a small tree, limbed up selectively and gradually? If not, you'll have to whack it back and wait for it to sprout new growth. Try to leave some green "feather growth" on each branch you cut back.

It is outside the door of my apartment. I am allowed to plant around it, but that doesn't leave much sunny room. I can really "whack it back"? Can I do it now? You and I are in the same zone.

I have one at the edge of my bay window. I trimmed it up and three feet and it is a very interesting tree. In my area the yews are putting on new growth now, so it would be a good time for me to give it a haircut.

Yews will even re-grow from stumps (one of very few conifers that will). I've seen it happen. Go ahead and prune as you need to.

PS Guy's not quite right about them living forever - 4,000 years seems to be about their limit!

Resin, I'll remind you of your egregious error when the first one I planted reaches 4001!
