LOL I've got a 'twist' to these tales. My husband hates tv sports. Yep really. I'm the football fan in this house! I don't let my addiction for sports get in the way of my gardening though. ;) I will get my gardening done in time to watch my favorite team play. I have a very long line of sports fans in my family. Three grandsons that have been great fb players and one son-in-law that is an athletic director.
My hubby is an outdoor guy. He does help me with the gardens once in a while. He will help do the real heavy stuff. He helped me put my two rock gardens together. He did the rock work while I hauled the dirt.
Vines and Creepers
I have heard of women like you, just never met one before! LOL. actually I have cousins that are sports nuts and I think if you have boy children it tends to become part of the family routine. I have only girls and my only grandchild, a boy, is only 3 1/2 so when FB or BB is on tv he is easy to distract! He loves working in the garden w/ me, knows and remembers the names of all my plants! I tell you in 20 some years he will make some sweet girl a wonderful husband!
LOL Yes there are a few of us out there. Our families consist of mostly boys and you are so right. When there are boys you tend to get interested in what they are involved in. I am a real nut for high school football! If I couldn't go to the boy's games I listened on the radio and then we would talk on the phone. Two of my grandsons played college ball. One grandson now coaches along with his Dad. Personally I think my oldest daughter is an exception! She is the wife and Mother of all these guys. L But she and I are avid gardeners and love to talk about our gardens and trade plants back and forth.
I have a little 3 yr. old granddaughter too and she loves to help me in the garden. ;) She knows what many of the plants are and loves to water for me. She has her own veggie garden at her house. ;) So I'm passing the love of gardening on down the line.
Isn't that fun? I have to wait for my grandson to come over to pick the ripe tomatoes, he just loves it!
Yes! We have a ball together. ;) My tomatoes were put in late and just now blooming so my little granddaughter is bringing me tomatoes. She has to tell me all about her garden and her chickens. She has chickens too. *g*
We feel like she is our little girl. We've been keeping her since she was 6 wks old when my daughter went back to work. Of course she is 3 now so we don't keep her all the time like we used to. At 3 she's quite the telephone conversationalist!
Your little guy sounds like a doll. ;)
OK....I know I told someone this but my hubby calls my gardening and my talking to you guys "plant porn". He goes to bed and this is my time. Like everyone else's husband, when I start talking plants, or what I want to do his blood pressure drops REEEEEAAAAALLLLLLLYYYYY low and he just asks, "OK, so what job do you have in store for me next?" and then just tells me to direct. He doesn't want to know why only where. Hehehehehe.
Well at least he helps you Kristi- mine expects that I won't need his help and if I do ask he puts it off and then really only gives a half hearted effort. He doesn't like to get dirty - what must he think of me, I am always dirty!
Yeah Dancey I just love my grandson, we watch him while my daughter works so he is hear quite a bit. He calls this his other house. They are so eager to assist at this age and most of the time I am not in any rush so letting him help works our well. My daughter says "You have so much patience!" I say no, I just don't have a schedule to keep.
April
Yes, I know that I'm very lucky. He's wonderful and I do appreciate all that he does for me. He's not lazy at all like my ex husband. He does get bored of my gardening and when he's had enough, he will stomp his feet and say, "Pay Me Some Attention!", at which point, I will drop everything I'm doing and treat him like a little baby. Then I can ask him to build/make something else. Hahahaha! Actually, we are fairly balanced in our chore life and I feel pretty blessed. Not like my ex at all.
In our younger days we were balanced but then he started having joint problems, knee, back, etc and I started doing more until it ended up the way it is now. When I was younger marrying a guy 6 years older was great, but every year once you get to say 50, is harder than the last so I do know that he can't do what he used to. He's 56- not that old I know, but his constant basketball, tennis, etc. activities from a young age on did a job on his joints. He has arthritis, gout and high blood pressure- oh and did I forget to mention his addiction to sports on TV, LOL. I never got too involved w/ sports but was always busy w/ some activity that required me to be physical, his physical activity was always sports related so once he couldn't play anymore he really had nothing but TV or computers. I tell you he may be no help in the garden, but he's johnny on the spot when I screw up my computer! and I have every new program that comes down the pike. Always something to balance our shortcomings!
I used to be a computer tech and have fun with the latest gadgets. Don't do it for a living anymore. I used to be on call for 23 plants that operated 24/7 all year long. Inevitably, at least 2 plants would go down every single night and I'd be on the phone until 4 in the morning and turn around and have to be at work with a smile on at 7:00 am. With a 2 year old! Needless to say, it's only a small hobby these days. I mre into gardening, cooking, crocheting and needle work. I have a job with no stress. 9:00 - 4:30 and not much to do (which can be stressful in itself sometimes). But hey, I can play here as much as I want during the day!
Good for you! What't the point of having a family and garden, etc, if all you time is spent w/ work related things. I did that for a long time but not anymore.
Yep. I'm a changed woman. I was diagnosed with Lupus and Sjogren's by the time my daughter was three, went thru a divorce by the time she was 4 and all the while asked myself, what on earth am I doing. It took a while but life became more meaningful and important. Met a wonderful man and gave up my career. It was the best thing I ever did in my life. I quit my job and boy did we struggle financially. Worked for an oil company doing contract work at home in the mornings, volunteered at the school in the afternoons and watched many children after school (at one point 12!). But we made memories! I'm back at work full time but all my kids still come to visit me....had 4 of them tonight for dinner! Life doesn't get much better than that. They all still want to come spend time with us. Feeling a little nostalgic and regretting going back to work full time. Summers are especially hard because we had soooooo much fun! We all had season passes to the water park and went 2x/week. They all had their own special garden plot and planted their fav. veggie. Boy do I miss it. Sniff, sniff. And they're growing up sooooooo much.....
Sorry. Just wish I would have never gone back to work but had no choice.
Well very few can afford to be unemployed...my own is not w/o significant cost.
It's definitely a trade off. When I'm not working I wear the same ole rags . What's the point of buying new clothes if you have no place to wear them?
K - it sounds like you have been blessed, except for the working part, but work has its rewards......mostly a paycheck but sometimes satisfaction in working hard.
It's never an easy choice, in my case the choice was made for me. I was layed off after 6 yrs w/ 1 company then got a job and was layed off again- it was too much for me, too emmotional- couldn't help but take it personally and it was more than I could deal w/. Luckily my husband's position had changed allowing me to stay off work w/ some changes- yeah I am wearing the same old rags- sometimes I look at new clothes and want them, but I'd just get them dirty working in the yard and the neighors already think I am strange, imagine if I was working in the yard wearing a nice tailored suit and pumps! LOL.
Yes, but I don't work hard. I'm not complaining.....I would rather DMail you all because employers look at our blogs these days so I can't say what I do (other than it is adminstrative and not anything bad). Can only say that my work takes me about 30 minutes per day and the rest of the day I'm bored out of my wits. Everyone says, "how cushy", and they're right, but boredom isn't fun. I've gained 20 lbs (I'm a short little s*#&!, 5') and I need activity. I'd like to find another job but I wouldn't be able to do the things for my daughter if I were somewhere else. I keep thinking.... as soon as she's in college....
Yeah, you would definitely get some looks with that outfit. Is it any worse than T shirts that have every different color of pollen and plant juice on them? Oh, my jean shorts....they were so stained I painted scenes on them. Really! One has some flamingoes and the others have some viny flowers. At first I thought it would wash off, but man, that paint hangs on! It looks kind of cool, not boutique cool, but okay. Way better than the stains.
April, I think we were posting at the same time.
I don't by myself clothes either. What's the point? I'm in a teensy little office with only me and my boss, I have an eleven year old that I have to save up for college for, and I'd rather spend my extra dough on plants. So there. Something I like. Hey, I shower and put my makeup on, what more should I do? I purty myself up for hubby once in awhile, when I think he needs me purtying up. I'm busy. Hehehe. And I like it that way.
Well I like the idea of painting your clothes! I know that paint holds on because I can't tell you how many times I have decided to paint something and not thought about the fact that I was wearing my best pair of jeans...oh well they were my best pair! LOL.
Kristi at least you can purty up, me I am too old to purty up! LOL. One day I looked in the mirror and said "Hey, who it that old bag stareing at?!" Then I realized it was me! LOL. Oh well. As long as you wear clean underwear what else is there! LOL.
You guys are pretty funny!
I'm sleepy today.
April, you crack me up!
Well we all have some talent don't we? Too bad I don't have talents that translate into income! LOL.
April, I'm with you. I'll decide either to paint or get under the car for something and then realize I have on a white shirt. I know it only takes a minute to change, but there you are. If it were a clean white shirt, you'd know it wasn't mine. I do have to dress for work but I'm just as likely to start mowing with a dress on as go change for it. My mother still just shakes her head when she hears about it.
There's a "Rent-a-Husband" for doing small repairs around the house. You could do a "Rent-a-Wife"!
Ya'll are so funny!! I've gotten many laughs reading this thread. ;) I need to paint or sew on colorful patches on my garden denim jeans. They've been washed so many times they have holes around the brads now. Denim jeans is all I wear here at home to work in. Well.........undies and a top too.
'Rent-a-wife' sounds like some other profession.........hmmmm..lol,
Yeah I don't own a t shirt that doesn't have some sort of stain- we all laugh at my daughter and me, we can't seem to drink from a cup, glass or straw w/o having something drip down our shirts! Add to that gardening, painting or repair work and you know what my shirts look like. All my jeans have grass stains or ground in dirt somewhere on them - so yeah I think I am the woman all the neighborhood is looking at- men want me, and women want to be me....NOT! LOL.
Oh I think I have not been completely fair to my husband- there are a few things he does routinely, w/o any prodding or nagging from me- he puts the seat down 98% (I'll take 98%, nobody's perfect) of the time and whenever he showers he squeegies (sp) the tile and glass w/o fail!
So he may not be all that in the garden, w/ a paintbrush, wrench, sharpening stone, etc but he has his finer points- oh yeah he makes the best salsa that I have ever eaten.
All of that may not be particularly valuable on any given day but I have to give credit where credit is due.
Wonder what he would say my good points/skills are?
Good one April....that's funny. I wish I had a talent that made money too. If there was a monetary award for the most stains on my clothes, or the most times someone has screamed at a creepy bug, or the big one..............tadadada......picking up sticks in my flower beds. I can't stand them, even the little bitty ones. I am a sick puppy.
Have you seen the buttopiary? I'll have to get back to ya, can't remember which section.
It's in Garden Talk

Well, they're all good for at least a little snuggling.
Found that bulbine "tangerine" on lunch just now. Wish I could go home and plant right now! I am sweaty from shopping on my lunch hour. Yuck. Maybe I'll stink enough that I get sent home. Fingers crossed.
It's just amazing what gardeners will wish for... like body odor...
Yup, I wish I were super stinky right now....
I wish my fingernails were packed with dirt...
Just came back from a brief outting! IT'S REALLY HOT!!! MUGGY TOO!
Yuck, if you were out shopping at lunch you must be sweaty and stinky! You need to go home!
Brigidlily, you mean my finger nails are not supposed to be packed w/ dirt? LOL, I thought they were naturally that way.
I wish I could be stung by a wasp...
Fly girl, that is going a bit far don't you think?
Here is the picture you were referring to

somebody is way more talented than I am. Wonder how the HOA would respond?
I'm just trying to be amazing, and there's no cleanup required like the other 2 ;)
WELL, lord love a duck, I am super stinky right now! Weeds grow really well when it rains, and rains, and rains, etc....LOL But had to stop by before taking my shower...Addicted.

Giant swallowtail. They're called orange dogs by those in the citrus industry and are considered a pest because they eat the citrus leaves. Looks like a bird dropping, especially when they are younger.
Ok as long as it's going to turn into something nice- I have to tell you I am not a bug, caterpillar fan- really those things give me the creeps! Last year I did plant butterfly weed so that we could see all the monarchs and I have left all my cassia, senna which are host plants for sulphers but I am not too sure that I want to deal w/ much more. What are those awful thick, green ones? Tomato worms? Oh man they give me the heebie jeebies!
