I broke this branch off of a shrub that i'm 99% sure is gardenia. I could smell the fragrance from 50ft away. Anyone know if I could root cuttings?
Gardenia
Yes it's a gardenia and yes you can root it... Looks like august beauty gardenia.
here's a link for you root. http://www.briansgarden.com/questions/021020q.html
Good luck :)

My mother rooted cuttings for half the town. She would cut a stem with a flower on it--about 8 inches long and put it in the ground with a jar over it. When it began to sprout new leaves she would remove the jar.
The cutting in the picture was from a shrub growing under a large live oak tree in Mobile. I didn't even know they liked dappled shade, the tags at the nurseries always say full sun.
Wow! Would she keep it watered? Thanks!!

My gardenia came from a cutting that rooted in water. It's the common old fashioned one with the really large leaves.
Yes, my mother kept it watered. I guess the jar acted like a little hothouse. She never lost a cutting and people still talk about her gardenia bushes that they have. I lost a lot in Hurricane Katrina. I think I'll go ask someone for a cutting from my mother's bushes.
Usually when a tag says "full sun" it does not mean the hot, unrelenting sun of the south. I learned the hard way after losing too many things that "full sun" means dappled sun in the deep southern U. S. My gardenias yellow in full sun and thrive in partial sun or dappled sun.
Thanks for sharing... I'm sorry about losing your shrubs in Katrina. Yes you should go get some cuttings of your moms gardenias. So I'm guessing that the jars had to be in shade so that they didn't cook in the sun?
My cousin use to own the Causeway bar and grill across the street from the mall in Metairie. I've been there :)
