Love water hyacinths and water lettuce, unfortunately they are banned in Texas, they're considered 'invasive', can't buy them anywhere. It makes it difficult to shade the surface, the water lilies are trying. Anyone have any other suggestions? Oh, maybe a big tarp, that would look nice.
I know I use to live in Tom ball and I use to spend alot of time in the woodlands, but that is the one nice thing about living here they won't survive our winters but I am going to try to put these I just received in the greenhouse and maybe I can keep them until next year..
You can try this stuff called shade, I will have to look and see what the name is but Lowe's caries it and that is what it is suppose to do. It turns your water blue and maybe that might help you..Here is a picture of mine right after I added it..
Nice to see someone close to where I use to live, my kids still live in and around Houston still..
Thanks for the tip VS, I'll try it. Right now I'm battling algae due to how much sun is hitting the surface. Here's an interesting story.....A few years ago I found a pond, I'm always searching for the runaway lettuce or hyacinth, and I scooped up some hyacinths. The pond was full of them. Just as I was getting in my car a Woodlands park ranger pulls up. He was really mad that I was getting them. I promised they would not leave my back yard, ever! He made me throw them back. He said they were getting ready to kill off the hyacinths. That pond is still full of them today.
I have heard of other stories just like that. I am just glad we can have them here but I am hoping this year they might bloom. Every year I have them but never can get them to bloom so I am going to keep a couple in the pond and keep a couple in the fountain I have out front and maybe i might get lucky..
I find the blue shade has helped even with the algae as well..Also try some hydrogen peroxide it helps also with algae, I got that tip from another tread on here last year..
I know the heat is so much worse out there, my kids keep telling me and that is one reason I can not get my hubby back out there in the summer. Every time we go he is ready to come back to the mountains..
Oh the heat! And the humidity! Don't get me started. Are the hyacinths in the sun? Usually those things multiply and bloom their heads off.
Yep full sun all day up until about 3-4pm so I could not figure out why mine won't bloom all they do is multiply, I kept thinking there that I did not have something in the water that they needed but I don't know what it might be. Someone told me to put some in a bucket away from the fish and keep alternating them so I am going to try that this summer and see what happens..Yeah I don't miss that heat and humidity after 18 yrs living out there but still I think the summers here are catching up and our temps are on the rise by the weekend and not much rain in the forecast..
Vickie
VC - do you have koi? When I had koi they ate everything.......could they be eating the hyacinth roots before they are able to bloom?
No just gold fish but I think they had to be for it not to bloom so that is why I am going to put some in water where there is no fish just to see..
question~
are the hyacinth hearty in zone 5a? Rachel
No they are not hardy in your zone or here either, that is one of the reasons they are not banned but I am going to bring a few in the GH this winter and try to keep them..My water lily can over winter in the pond with the fish and the underwater plants I have came through the winter ok..
Vickie
do water ilies overwinter in zone5a? Rachel
My hardy Lilies do as long as I place them in the deepest part of the pond. The first year I had them my pond was not deep enough so I placed them in a 5 gal. bucket and they survived the winter in there..
Mine is called 'Attraction' and is hardy to from 4a..I think most of the hardy would be the same but you can check on a particular variety in the plant files..
fly_girl: For shade and coverage of your pond, you might try a floating island. I got one the other day (sorry, I don't have access to a picture right now) its a piece of foam that floats with holes for pots to plant bog plants in. I have a pitcher plant, some moneywort and cameleon plants in mine.
J - where did you get it, it sounds like it would work. Thanks
I got mine at Serracenia NW, which I found through the garden watchdog. I bought one of their yummy pitcher plants for the center of the island, it was a special. Not sure if it is still going on...
