How Long Until it Blooms?

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

I planted Moon Flower about two weeks ago and the plants have now sprouted. Each of them have two leaves up with a small growth in between them. How long before it blooms? This is my first attempt at the Moon Flower. Thanks for the info.

At least one month and maybe closer to two would be my guess.

Depends some on the weather, too. I'm in zone 6b, and I've noticed that on a hot, sunny day and the plants get lots of water, they seem to grow before your eyes, but on a cool day with cooler nights (in the 40s/50s), they kinda just seem to hang around and do nothing. I planted mine in the middle of May, and they are also up with the barest hint of first true leaves showing between the baby leaves. I can't wait - it's been years since I planted MF or MGs, and I didn't keep a journal about these things. I'm was only semi-almost-but-not-really good about my journal last year, and this year I'm in the sorta good catagory, but already I have seen how it has helped & how it will help in years to come. Good luck! Be interested if you would post here when you get your first bud & bloom (pictures, pictures, of course :-)

You have to be observant I think for the first blooms but when in full bloom you can`t miss it because it gets very profuse and they are beautiful.

Great Info! I was looking at them yesterday. I can see the second set of leaves coming on. I read where they don't like much fertilizer. Is this true? I water them about every other day. It has been quite warm here the past few days and sometimes they look a little wilted in the afternoons. I can't wait to see them bloom. A neighbor of mine had them, and the sight was quite impressive.

Waiting for someone to answer about fertilizer for Moon flower and MG's.....

Don't feed your mg's .. all you'll get is beautiful lush foliage.

Thank you, what about the moon flower vine? Or is that the same?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Same with moon flower. I fert mine with miracle grow at 1/4 strength every other week or so because mine are planted pretty much in pure sand.

HOT weather is here, now (90's/100's) and they are starting to want to twine. Hopefuly they hit the fence soon and start "running".

Take care everyone!

My Ipomoea alba MoonFlower takes at least 90 days before I see blooms. Right now they are almost touching my roof, but no blooms YET!
AND - No Fertilizer for this one . . .

As to other MG's - another story!
There is some great information that Ron posted on MG fertilization floating around. I'll see if I can find the thread and post the link.

This is the first year I've fertilized my Japanese MG's, and have been amazed at how lush and healthy they are. And, blooms too!

Also, most important above fertilizer for the JMG's, and some others, is your soil. You will be surprised at what amending your soil will do, not only for your MG's, but for any of your plants. I'm amending ALL of my beds this year and what a job. Still working on them.
But the hard work WILL pay off!

Here are mine. The very topmost vine is over 11 feet above the top of the pots. Of course the vines are longer because most of them wrap around the tree at least once.

They were sown in starter mix April 2, the hypocotlys started showing on the 4th. I forgot to write down the date when I moved them to these pots. There are 5 vines in each pot.

Today I noticed the first bud. So I should have blooms in a week or two.
