Moving a Palm Tree

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Hello.

I have a relatively large palm tree that does not fit well in my back yard. It is approximately 20 ft. tall and the base trunk is about 2.5 ft in diameter. I am planning to have it removed and my neighbor suggested that I might want to see if someone would want it and would remove it, rather than cutting it down.

Is this possible? Can palm trees this size be moved, and would anyone want to go to the trouble to move it?

Thanks for your help!

I think they can be moved, but I imagine it would be ridiculously expensive to do. But if there's someone who really wants a big palm tree, paying to have yours removed might be cheaper than buying a new one that size?

From what I have heard (palms don't grow here!) they are pretty easy to move, even in very large sizes. There are several companies in Texas that specialize in moving large trees. Ask your extension office or state arborist chapter for some referrals and see what they say.

I agree with Guy. There are nurseries that specialize in specimen palms who have the right equipment to move it (tree spade) who'd be glad to know about your palm. A 20' palm would be extremely heavy. Do a google for specimen palms texas and see what you can find.

Contact these guys and if they can't, they will know someone: http://www.texaspalms.com/

Palms do not have a spreading root system as most trees therefore the moving of a palm is a simpler process. It is worth a try. I have seen them moved in southeast Louisiana many times and a front end loader was the largest piece of equipment.
