pruning pomegrates

Monroe, NC(Zone 7b)

We have three young pomegranate trees. Ages 3 to 5, I believe. I had ample fruit on one the year after iit first season in the ground, very few last year, none (one flower) this year. The other two have not bloomed. This year I tried to prune sensibly in late winter, opening the trees a little , removing a few oldest cances. I have not pruned themn down to the 5 or so trunks that are reommended (I know that they can also be pruned to single trunk tree form), but figured on reducing the number of main trunks again this winter. I know that they grow on new wood. I cut smaller branches, but was done cutting before new branches and leaves emerged. They grow in clay soil with a fair amount of organic ammendments. Anyone have any advice?

I love fruiting trees and shrubs but I don't have a pomegranate. Wish I did. Sorry.

Bumping to move this up to the top for others to take a look.

I wish we could grow them up here, too. I've seen some beautiful ones in Spain, but they won't grow here in Illinois. Maybe one of our southern or European participants will see the thread now that it's been bumped up and offer some experienced advice.

I think I may have found your answer: http://www.orchardsedge.com/qa.jsp?category=Fruit+and+Nut+Bearing+Trees+and+Plants#23 - it describes fruiting on 2-3 yr wood. I trim my plants for cuttings all the time which would explain why I don't see flowers or fruit. I noticed the plant in a container against the house grew significantly faster and flowered whereas the others didn't grow that fast or flower.
