Philadelphus 'Buckley's Quill'

Eau Claire, WI

I had almost given up on this shrub after last year. Lack of flowering, powdery mildew and gangly habit had pushed me to the edge of reason and my foot was on the shovel. I think I put the fear of Hinkley in it as it is finally living up to the press clippings.

Any fragrance?

Fragrance of this Mockorange is good, but not outstanding. You can definately pick it up without sticking your nose in the flower, but its not as nice as Miniature Snowflake, which I also have. Miniature Snowflake is a great little shrub, but seems to resent our winters and has suffered severe dieback every year I've had it.

I must say this has been a great spring for fragrance in the garden. I had 'Buckley's Quill' Mockorange, 'Athens' Sweetshrub, 'Carol Macke' Daphne, 'Belle Poitevine' Shrub Rose, and Fringe Tree all flowering pretty heavily at the same time. It smelled like a perfume factory for awhile and I wish it would never end. The amazing thing is we've had absolutely no insect problems whatsoever. The shrub rose is normally covered with Chafers(sp?), but nothing this year. Also no sign of Japanese Beetles. Could this be connected to the pervasive blue sky situation? Frankly, I've had enough of blue skys--we need rain.
