Need Help to Decide Which Tree

Decatur, GA(Zone 7a)

We are about to cut down to huge cleyeras (sp) that are about 25' tall and huge. I need room for shade plants, so I would like to get a tree that is small and beautiful. It will get partial sun, but will be shaded in the heat of the day by a neighboring white crepe myrtle.

I've been thinking about a smoke tree, a vareigated dogwood, and a dogwood looking tree that has purple berries, surrounded by red (the part that holds the berries onto the tree). I don't want a plain dogwood (too common) or another crepe myrtle.

Any comments on my short list? Any other suggestions? Thanks!

1. Is one of your proposed plants Clerodendrum?

2. Try visiting your local nursery, observing the plants there, and writing done the botanical names of those you like so you can share them with us in a way that we'll know for sure which plants you are proposing.

3. Are you sure you're doing the right thing by removing both of your Cleyeras? I wish I could grow one up here!

How about a Franklinia? They seem to do ok in part-sun.
How about Mahonia x media 'Charity' or one of the other cultivars - grows to about 12' around here.
Stewartia?

Go with Rough Leafed Dogwood, I just got one here from Frostweed and they are stunning and nothing like your run of the mill Dogwoods. These are a Texas Native (90% of my yard is native so if I have anything else here they have to have a good reason to keep my yard in the Texas Natives list) take heat great (in full sun here!) and the flowers are less gaudy then the normal dogwood. The other that just pops to mind is the redbud, you can get eastern redbuds at great deals and they love to grow.... the color just cannot be beat.

Heptacodium...I found it easy to grow here in neighboring Alabama. Interesting year-round with curving form, peeling bark and pretty flowers. I'm glad I bought one!
