Need Help-Burlap?

Saint Paul, MN(Zone 4a)

Looking for ways to stop erosion and weeds. Will putting down burlap help? This would be IN my garden. I am a newbie, and trying to figure it all out. Thanks. Laurie

Laurie,

Here is a link to a shrub developed by the U.S. Department of Ag to control soil erosion. I have a bunch of it growing in my yard. It spreads very quickly and it has very beautiful flowers in late may to june. It is also a nitrogen-fixer. I really really like it a lot. BTW for some reason it doesn't appear to be like the rest of the locust family as I have never seen any pests on my plants or other around me. It is a fairly common shrub around me.
BTW it doesn't produce seeds and it is somewhat difficult to dig up and move around once planted. Same can be said for starts.

Hi Laurie,
I don't know about the burlap..do you mean burlap bags under the soil line? I have a hilly area that gets heavy erosion and I've done 2 things. In the flower garden corner, I've added sludge as a mulch, which is heavy and doesn't move with rain but it doesn't smother anything. Sludge is human waste that is composted and treated for use in flower gardens, free from municipalities. On the slope, I planted Crown Vetch (Penngift), which is also a nitrogen fixing plant. It is used extensively on highways to control erosion and it flowers all summer. However, it is very invasive and if planted IN your garden, it would smother everything out.
