Quick question regarding Comptonia peregrina

I went to this site and noticed that this plant was difficult to transplant and establish. Would anyone be in a position real quick to share with me why pieces of sod are being recommended?

It states that propagation by division of sod. Sod = Held together by matted roots. At least I think.

Eek, I didn't read it that way. I literally read it as sod. I sent my husband to pick up a few pieces of sod to put around the base of the plants. I have no idea what I was thinking. Perhaps it is best to just use the chunks of sod around the bases of the Comptonia... at least for a while until they are "established"... if but for no reason other than appearances at this point in time so my husband doesn't have something else to tease me about.

Just lay the sod upside down so it doesn't root into the transplant. But a good source of soil and nitrogen.

It's too late, he already knows. He saw me running in and out to check the computer to see if anyone was responding. He walked in to read what was being suggested. He knows I screwed up. He did get a new spade when he went to go get the sod for me so the trip wasn't a total waste. It's ok, it just been a rough week and I think my brain wandered away for a bit.
