Summer Bulbs - Pictures and Discussion - Part I

Thanks Boojums, I've seen those Iris all my life so I knew they were old, lol.
I'll tell my neighbor, they are his.

You are welcome. I was so excited when I figured them out last year. And now I see them all over. They are with my pale yellow historic iris. The last time I was on Isle D'Orlean near Quebec City, I saw the exact same combo there!

Waiting for lilies here.

Talking irises, I have several from different places, and NONE of them are the correct ones! Excepting two I got from ebay.

I'm a day late with this, Arisaema ciliatum, I think this one is correct.

One of my wrong irises, this should be a repeat bloomer, I think it was supposed to be Best Bet, in the same pack was Mother Earth, Pass The Wine, Jennifer Rebecca, all the wrong ones.

This could be Mother Earth substitute

That Mother Earth is very pretty!

My lilies are finally starting to bloom. I got a mix of short asiatics from Van Engelen.
These are along the rock wall beside the driveway. Finally planted 2yrs ago.

And a very pretty lily.

Love the last one Tammy!

Mother Earth doesn't quite look like that, it has been substituted, but it is very scented and has lots of blooms. I planted it last year, this is it's first flowering.

What a pretty red aquilegia in the background too!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Janet, ditto what tammy said on the red aquilegia. also, I adore the arisaema.

tammy, name of tiny lily. very cute. Extremely relieved you don't have "man hands" (to quote a Seinfeld episode)

Denver, CO

And what a dumb episode. One of few, if any otherrs, I ever saw. That is why I don't watch television anymore and do nearly nothing but garden in my free time!

Tammy, your stand of lilies is great; the last one has a very unique color.
Walaby: down with anyone who sells misrepresented plant material!

Don't know the name of the tiny lily - I got it in a mix. I suspect something went awry with just that
flower but I'll have to wait for another to bloom to be sure it was an anomoly.

The Aquilegia is one I grew from Spring Magic, it's taller and flowers forever, probably crossed with Songbird Cardinal. I have Arisaema consanguineum flowering too, 3rd year running, get pic later.

Kinkajou Shrew, 'correct', and I wondered why the other one in PF was this colour, it must be the soil because mine is now 'this colour'.

Ooo... reminds me of Batik (except color)

Kinkajou Shrew is outstanding as is!! Great pic, too.

Tammy I love your Batik!

Thanks boojum,

Looks like Jack (in the pulpit) went to the Bahamas! Like Boots on Parade for those who remember. Or those traveling flamingos that sent postcards.

It is a show off boojum! It's first flowering 3 years ago the leaves were even better, and I had a second spathe lower down the stem with another leaf. I have read they make a male and female spathe, and I did have a seed head but no viable seed made.

This is a pic my neighbour took, lower pixels then in digi cameras, I didn't have a digi.

This is the 35mm pic I took, I took a digi pic of the photo, it's actually only 2 years ago but in it's 3rd flowering

Just wonderful, wallaby!

Denver, CO

Dashing! Will the spathe color increase in maurity? But really, it is the leaves that set it off. (Nice Phormium, by the way)

I rarely get visits by these fellows, but this summer is a good one for their population. Lilium 'Cancun' with guest star Western Tiger Swallowtail.

Yes the darker purplish colour on the hood does deepen a little, they are fascinating plants. A snail has nibbled a good chunk out of both sides of a leaf, I've been out tonight picking a few up. It must take them ages to climb that stem! Phormium is Jester, they have better colouring when young.

Cancun is a cracker, so thinks the Swallowtail too.

Great pics jmorth! Love that shot of the Peruvian daff, and your lilies are scrump. The catalog pics of Italia are usually more red, is it more pink as your pic shows? I've been wanting some strong pink Asiatics and that looks like a good one. And love those coral blends; they remind me of a sunrise.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

jmorth your Ismene look great! Mine are just growing, you must have had them in the warmth.

Jack went to the Bahamas and it rained, but his umbrella kept his hood dry.

Hood? It is probably best to go with that. Wallaby, have you had the pleasure of reading the Aroid section of Tony Avent's Plant Delights catalogue?
(I can hear sniggering already of the stateside folks...)

Love that Bletilla! Voles ate 3 of my 5 last year, so I moved the remaining 2 and they're safely growing. I had a surprise that 1 was variegated, and believe it or not, that one was spared!

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

gemini sage,
the Italia pictured is a good color reproduction of it's reality, a deep pink;
its in a large pot that catches sun 85% of the day...

Denver, CO

Neal, did you get your Bletilla from B&B?

Love that Italia, on my got a have list now. Great that it keeps it's color so well in the sun.

Kenton, yes, B&B had the best price I've seen on them.

Denver, CO

I ask because a friend of mine has a (B&B this year) variegated (pink) Bletilla. A great thing to mix up, eh?: Order the most common sp of a genus and get one of the rarer! I had difficulty with the white-flowered albostriata rotting this spring. I don't think it made it this year. Foey on it!

My dracunculis vulgaris, in all its glory yesterday. It didn't smell as strong as last years, and I thought it didn't look as big, but perhaps a little taller. I can see male and female flowers in it's throat, a little difficult to photograph. Last night there was a pair of rectangular beetles in there, this morning a different, smaller and more rounded pair of beetles. It had a slight sweet scent coming from the flower area, surprising! I may get seeds!
