A willow oak planted last year - "builders special" - approximately 12-14' tall. As you can see, it is lacking in branches, especially at the lower left side. Some other branches are stubby to say the least. Is this the way the tree will continue to look year after year? I'm trying to decide if this tree should be moved to a back location - out of the way and out of sight this fall, with a flowering tree planted in it's place. This tree is in a focal point garden bed so how it looks is important. It is still small enough that it can be moved without too much difficulty. Thoughts?
Is there hope for this tree?
Give it some time to establish (at least one full year per every inch of trunk diameter) and it will be fine, as long as the roots are OK and it wasn't planted to deeply. If you move it now you'll set it back even more. And don't remove any more of the lower limbs for a while either. Wait at least two years to do any more pruning, except for dead or damaged branches.

Very pretty tree, I like the texture of the leaves. :0)
