I've worried about this branch since I moved here a year ago. In the winter all the off-shoots appear to go straight up too. But it's so big! Is it possible for a water sprout to grow this large?
Could this be a water sprout on my maple?
A watersprout turns into a branch. A watersprout is also generally one year's growth (the second year it gets laterals). Your photo shows what may have started out as a watersprout when somebody trimmed a branch, but it is not really properly called a watersprout now.
Thank you Pete. I was afraid it was taking energy from the tree just going up and up and never out! LOL
