Do I have to admit it? Well, I will admit that it is a most desirable form. Absolutely stunning. It has that lightly and tastefully ruffled edge.
(J: big woody potted plant in right, back: That's cute. Nostalgia?)
Double Calla.
You might say that K, we had them growing on the road side, only to be ripped out years later like everything else!
Neal, will send you some later when the Pink Mist are slightly bigger, perhaps in a month so they can still establish? Make myself a note.
O. M. G. Janet, your Pink Mist pix are just sensational! What a wonderful flower (and the calla isn't bad either, tee-hee). (Sorry....)
I agree with you, Neal, this is a MUST HAVE beauty, just wonderful. And what about the pink flush on the outside! You are killing me here, Janet!
Neal~
I'd go with moving the aethiopicas. I think they'll take it all in stride. Usually they stall in the heat of summer and I'd move now, so they'll be ready to resume groth a little later on.
So, three of my four callas are not what they were supposed to be! That's bad. I used to work at that garden center and they are going to hear about this. Wonder if they'll lay it all on the bulb co.? The cultivars I ended up with weren't even on sale when I bought mine, so I'm going to find out if they had them this season and ran out. That should tell me a little more. Anyway, I'm happy with what I have, but I reall, really wanted Sangria!
And my "supposed-to-be-Sangria" is still just yellow but seems to be deepening a bit.
Robert.
I got a digital camera today so I can finally share some pictures......but I'm not promising good ones yet. Here is a semi-good one of cherry chiffon. I don't know if you can see or not that it isn't open very far. I think we pretty much decided it was the heat, but I thought I would post it anyway. Thanks. Fran
Fran, that's great! I see we have 'enabled' once again!
I think Cherry Chiffon should have a longer, narrower tube than some. The flowers do vary on a single plant, you may find you have another that opens a little more, or flares more at the top. Take a look at the pic of it here, click to enlarge, although it is more from above you can see the longer tube.

Keep us updated!
At least someone is getting true-to-name flowers, that is a great one, Fran. I remember it well. It may open more with age. Mine opened up broad from a long tube as I recall. Really fun shape. And picotee.
Blasted earwigs are eating my pollen!
K
Burp.
Squish! Spray: Ffft, Fffffft. Ffffffft.
Tussee, Sangria is lovely! And I think I may have one from a bag marked 'Flame'. Some of the bulbs have spotted leaves and some solid, so I knew there were going to be surprises. I'll get a pic of mine tommorrow to compare. Does yours have spotted leaves?
The leaves are spotted on Sangria, but not an all-over type of spotting. I noticed some leaves have spots only on one side, the other side a solid green. Just guessing here, but I attribute this strangeness to the bulb being juvenile, and expect they will be fully spotted next year. Here's hoping any surprises you find in your new batch will be different flowers than what you already have. I have yet to see a Calla I did not like.
Tussee
Oh, so envious of those who actually get to have a real Sangria! Just beautiful!
It's those nasty Japanese beetles that are eating pollen here. And the darn things just burrow further down in there when you try to evict them. Makes me so mad! Where are my tweezers?!!!!!
Robert.
Sangria is facing due south. If there are additional flowers, it will be interesting to see if they do a better job of wrapping. Like I've said, I feel this is a juvenile bulb, and as I garden in zone 5, I feel fortunate to have a bloom. :)
Tussee
k~
Love that Picasso!
Mmmmmmmmmm.........
Looked at Langeveld's site and they don't offer Mint Julip and none of what they list seems to be what I have (the yellowy supposed-to-be-Sangria). So I'll call it "Jaunisse".
Robert.
Tussee your Sangria is such a beautiful shape, love the cherry edging too! Zone5 can have hotter weather than we have, but colder winters. They are quite a forgiving bulb if treated correctly.
I love the wrap on Picasso, that was one I picked out as a 'must have', but it's not here yet. There doesn't seem to be as much interest, so the sellers only stock bog standard as a rule, I think it is slowly changing.
Those two would complement each other very well. Cameras do have toruble wiht th epurples and reds.
I saw some at the supermarket that looked like Gem Lavender, the blooms about half the size of mine and they are not huge. Lots of leaves though, the whole thing looked smaller. They probalby force them. There was also a mini albomaculata.
I think the blooms will get bigger, but it would seem there is a maximum, the plant does get a lot bigger though
Thanks Kenton. I got it off of ebay and was worried after I ordered because I found out the supplier was Hirt's and their Watchdog rating is sooo bad, but turned out good. I ordered the peach chiffon too and they came in a brown bag together so I had no idea which was which, was frustrating since I was doing a pink bed, but I guessed right. I have about 4 or 5 of those up now and none of them opened very much. I'll just have to wait to see how it goes. I also have another really pretty one open, it is a pale gold color with an orange blush. I think it's Neroli, but it may be mislabeled. I just love it. It just opened so I was waiting for the color to darken, before I made a positive id. It's been overcast for 2 days now so it hasn't really darkened.
Another lovely one, Fran.
Tussee, We (especially I) am glad you're joining the thread and sharing pictures, excellent.
If you can, please submit that picture of 'Black Pearl' to PlantFiles, it is a very quality photo that looks like the color with the influence of flash-highlights.

What is your favorite Zant, Tussee? What kind of mix do you use if they are potted, if in ground, what do you amend with or what sort of spot do you look for when planting? Have you ever had soft-rot?
I think there is sort of a limit to flower size, as there is a limit to eye size before it divides itself.
Kenton
James, I grow my Callas in what I call a micro-climate area in my garden, as my zone is 5. I'm attaching a photo that I sent to the rose forum as I was unaware of this group. My garden is amended with peat moss and sand two feet deep, and my Calla bed is facing south. I hope I never have to deal with soft rot - this is a problem with Callas I did not know about until two days ago. I do not have a true favorite, but when my Flame is peaking, it makes me look back! Today it seemed to be in high gear. Thank you for the welcome.
Tussee
Tussee, you do have some healthy looking callas there! Sounds like a good growing medium and spot for them, do you overwinter them in the ground?
Janet, I do leave my Calla bulbs in the garden and they seem to love their spot. If I had to dig them up and store, I probably would not have them. My garden is too large and labor intensive to have another plant that has to be dug in the fall for storage. I currently grow a couple of varieties of Canna (lots of these), a number of Dahlias, Caladiums (lots) and several other small bulbs. Spring in my GH is a nightmare!
Tussee
Tussee, it goes to show then that with the correct treatment you can grow these in colder climates. I might eventually try some in the ground, but first I would have to develop another part of the garden! So far I am having success getting mine through in a cold greenhouse, although we are in a warmer zone the climate in general is 'cool' to downright 'cold'! After a very long, cold winter we are now having temps. to over 30C, soon back to the average of 20-21C which I like, it's just all the rest I don't like!
I assume you keep the other plants in a greenhouse overwinter? I grow all my dahlias in the ground (never lift them), even the large decorative, I also have species and dwarf collarette. Canna I do get through as a rule in a greenhouse but lost a lot this winter. Just starting on caladiums. I have 3 of 6 x 8' greenhouses, and I have to keep juggling. I have to tiptoe through the pots even now!
Leaping Lizzards, a beautiful spot. Who is the Zant in the right side? Gold with reddish edge?
I had a 'Flame' come up in my non-microclimate east garden(6bish), along with Zephryanthes. Comically, my best palm that overwintered is in a spot that I had deemed worst, and as to the warmest spots: two dead palms!
K
Kenton, you think that's a beautiful spot in Tussee's garden, check out the rest of it here:

Tussee, I must brag on you. These are gardens more than worthy of any magazine or garden book.
Tussee;
Terrible. Absolutely terrible. You shouldn't go clipping pictures from slick magazines like "Fine Gardening" or "the English Garden" like that...
What is the lovely weeping specimen tree in your hosta bed? Its texture is extremely appealing. I like your 'Iceburg' grouping, terrifically classy. Thanks for the treat, Tussee, and thanks for the link, Neal.
Kenton
Tusseemussee~
WOW! What a beautiful spot!

Robert.
Neal, now that you have exposed me, :), perhaps you would like to see the first pictures I sent to DG. There's also a little history regarding the garden and how long it took to complete.
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/607725/
Tussee
Kenton, the tree is a weeping pine. This is a replacement as the first one reverted back to a regular pine.
Tussee
Well, I have read through the links and all I can say is 'simply enchanting!' Tussee you have done a superb job! I too live in an historic house, but not quite on the scale of yours.
I am also developing my garden from scratch, I am more of a plant collector, but they are fitting together nicely in each new bed I make, so far one a year.
Sangria, ah yes, now I am seeing why it is named as such. You can almost see the pieces of fruit in the wine! I am pleased you have posted that picture, it does make one think of the whys and wherefores. Such a lovely colour, one I will have to seek out next spring, if someone here has it that is!
Thank you, Janet. It is wonderful to wander the garden, and even with a mistake here and there, feel some satisfaction from knowing we planned and executed our gardens. As I wanted the garden to be completely from my efforts, I built the first two stone walls. Was planning more until my Mother and sweetheart carried on about the weight involved and how I was going to injure my back. I'm pleased I gave in on this one as they were totally correct. So like you, I planned, purchased, and planted my garden one bed at a time. When you have time, and plants are blooming, send photos. Probably should start a new thread as this one is getting so long. Also, if you are unable to purchase Sangria, I wonder if I could mail some to you. Since they would be without dirt, I would think I could. Have you ever gotten plants from the US?
Tussee
Tussee that is kind of you, January is mostly the time new stocks are in, quite a way off yet! I will have to make myself a note. Seeds are OK to here, but other things can be 'misdescribed', I have received without trouble that way. One person thought they had (and could) be honest, and they didn't arrive! A very generous person may I add!
You are industrious to have built your own walls! I do like to do things myself, but that isn't always possible. The rewards are far greater I do agree.
I do have lots of photos, you can see some of my efforts in my Plantfile entries, I have put a lot in since I became a subscriber last November.
This thread is getting long, I suppose a new thread could be started to 'show your callas'?
I could start one with my Cameo, which has opened today.
A pic for you, friends won't mind! This was last year, there is now another bed to the right where you can see a strip started.
I have started a new thread for Calla lilies, post them now! This years or last years, we don't mind!
