Lilac want bloom.

East Prairie, MO(Zone 7a)

I planted a Lilac bush a couple years ago and have not had a bloom on it yet. It has good greenery but no blooms. How long does it take a lilac bush to bloom and is three something I could fertilize with to make it bloom.

How much sun does it get?

Give it a generous dose of time, about 5-10 years' worth. Then it will be old enough to flower. At the moment, it is too young, like expecting a 5-year old child to have a baby.

It gets full sun.

I sure didn't know it took that long for one to bloom. Sounds like they act like the wisteria's.

Thank you both. I will quite worrying about it and will be patient and wait for the time for it to bloom, I hope I am still here when it does. I will be 61 tomorrow so that will make me about 71 when it blooms. Oh well maybe it will bloom before then.

Sami,
I have a lilac that is several years old, growing like crazy and is lush and healthy. It has never bloomed.

I later learned that it is too warm in the winter here in my zone for it to bloom. You are a couple zones higher than me so I hope that isnt your problem.

I hope that is not the same for here. I sure was looking forward to smelling that nice aroma from the Lilac Bush. I will just keep my fingers and toes crossed and hope one day it blooms

Do you prune it, and if so when?

I have never pruned it. It is only about three feet high now.
It is very small right now only about 3 feet high

This page is very informative, I find.

Go to the bottom of the page to see why lilacs don't bloom.

However, I expect it is just too young if it is only 3 ft tall. Is it a vulgaris or hyacintiflora variety, do you know? If so they take quite a bit of time before producing blooms.

If you want one that will bloom sooner mereyi 'Palibin' blooms very young, and let me tell you it's highly scented, I have a few in bloom now, and they perfume the whole yard. Mine normally bloom the spring after I plant them.

I do expect if your lilac is 3 feet tall it will bloom within a couple of years. You will have many years to enjoy it.

I have never pruned it

Excellent! Stick to that for the next 50 years or so, and you'll get more flowers.

Pruning lilacs is a good way of stopping them from flowering for 5 or 6 years

Polly thanks for the site. Wow that is very informative. I am not sure which species it is the tag is still on it but I have not been able to read it. I might have it written down somewhere. Will check and see.

You're welcome. I wouldn't worry if I was you.

And when you get those blooms, sniff them all you can.

I had three aunts, sisters of my mom. Aunt Minnie, Martha, and my wonderful Aunt Helen. Minnie, Helen and Mom all lived in the suburbs of Rochester NY, and were great lilac lovers, having shrubs all around, and attending the Lilac Festival yearly. Their houses were always filled with lilacs.

Minnie, Helen and Mom died in their 90's. Martha, on the other hand, a city dweller with nary a lilac in sight, died very young, I think she was 85. Minnie actually died while out in the garden throwing rocks, getting ready to plow.

So-----plant and enjoy lilacs all your life, and don't throw rocks after you're 90.
