No leaves on tree?

East Prairie, MO(Zone 7a)

I planted three October glory Maple trees last year. Two of them leafed out really good this year but one of them looks like it is dead exept for a new shooter coming up at the bottom of the tree. What should I do about the tree. There are no leaves at all on the tree and it looks like it is dead. Should I just dig it up and plant a new one in its place or might it come back out next year.

If you are sure the top half is dead, I would cut it down at ground level and let the new sprout at the bottom grow into a tree. If the sprout is coming from the roots instead of the trunk it may not be an October Glory but rather a seedling red maple. There would be nothing wrong with that in my opinion, but some people prefer the cultivar.

thanks so much for the info. The sprout is coming from the trunk. I do know that for sure. I just couldn't figure out why it was sprouting from the trunk and the tree look so dead at the top. I will give it a few more weeks and if it does not leaf then I will cut it back to where the new sprouts are and let it grow.

If you do cut it and it has more than one sprout at the bottom, pick the best looking sprout and cut off the rest. That way you will not have a multi-trunked tree when it gets bigger.

You might want to leave part of the dead trunk standing temporarily as a built-in training stake and deer deterent for the new sprout. Then cut it out in a year or two after the sprout is established and growing straight.

thanks

I will cut the one that is the smallest shooter and that is a good idea about leaving the dead trunk for support.

Thanks to all
