Help! My first Japanese Maple!

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

And its a baby.
Any tips appreciated and whats this I read about not watering it with well water???

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Japanese maples are no more demanding than any other plant. In fact, they are pretty tough. You are at about the limit of its northern hardiness, however, so a protected site might be best.

Why not water with well water? I water my whole yard with well water, and I feel better about using it than city water, which can have a high pH and high levels of chlorine. Locally, you might have issues with high pH, heavy metals, or some other pollutants in well water, I don't know. You could have it tested.

As for your JM, just give it normal garden soil, keep it mulched, and only water when during drought, and it should be happy. It's probably best not to fertilize it much, if at all.

Thanks Scott!
I have seen JM growing in my area so heres hoping.
I think I read wtaering them hard water causes the tips of the leaves to burn.

Rose, most water softeners use salt, so it's the softened water that is likely to burn your plants. Water straight from the well should be OK. But do check the pH and follow Decrepit's other suggestions.
