She put on all these blooms while in a 14 inch pot. I upgraded her pot size dramatically today, now we'll see what she does. CG was the frist to bloom this season but whiskers wasn't far behind. I have lots of buds about to open on different brugs, 4 of which I grew from seeds so I'm anxious to see what they will be.
Hope the pictures make you smile.
Judy
Whiskers Amazes Me
I sure hope my 'whiskers ' looks as good
wonderful Judy..very , very nice you have great yard.
Judy,
Congratulations on your lovely blooms!!
Sharon
Judy....nice blooms. You are way ahead of me. Keep 'em coming. Love to see some beautiful blooms at this time of the year. Makes the wait for spring worth while.
Isn't Whiskers a nice Brug Judy? Yours is a beauty.
I hope you get something very special from your seedlings.
GardenGuyKin,
If memory serves me correctly, I got the idea from you about this time last year. Living in the middle of the woods makes it almost impossible to dig holes for the brugs due to the tree roots, so planting them in these tubs is the next best thing.
Thanks for the tip!!
Judy
Judy,
I do believe it was around this time of year I was talking about them. I think others have used them also. They are so useful with brugs once they get quite big and they don't tip over. Also, you can move them around quite easily also.
Your Whiskers is beautiful. Bet you have the best smelling Wooded area around!!
Whiskers are the first brugs getting buds on them here in my garden also.
looking good :)
I was just outside and while checking my Brugs I see Whiskers has about 8 little buds, now I just needs LOTS of warm weather.
I am still waiting on my Whiskers to have the first bud so sitting here drooling now...I do have to get it re-potted today into a still bigger pot. It has been so hot the last couple days and when I came home yesterday from work they were all dropping really bad but after sun went down and a little water they have all perked backup...
It's my opinion that Whiskers should be on every new brug owner's wish list because...
- it's easy to grow
- it sets buds in cooler weather therefore the first and last to bloom
- insects aren't as fond of it as other brugs
Here is mine a couple weeks ago and since it Y's in the GH I am hoping it won't be long before I get a bud off it..It just keeps getting taller. It grew like crazy last summer but didn't Y until Feb. so maybe it won't be long..I am going to re-pot it into a bigger pot today and I am thinking it is a little root bound..
Any thoughts that will help me..But you are right Judy it is a great Brug and bugs just don't really bother it but my do not have much experience..
I think it needs more fertilizer, but there are many more people here who have way more experience with Brugs than I do. Last year was my first year growing them. I threat them just like I do all my other plants but use more fertilizer, time release goes in the pot when I repot them. etc then I use Bayer 2n1 Rose Food & Systemic sparingly every 4 weeks or so to control the insects. If they look a little down, I'll throw a tad of 13-13-13 in the pot after I've watered them or it has rained. Many people spend more time spraying with Messengers, Miracle Gro, etc. and their Brugs have more blooms and are better looking than mine, but I just don't have the time to pamper them.
I mix up my own soil based upon texture, which depends upon what I have to work with at the time. I know that doesn't help a lot.
For this last batch.....
I started out with Jungle Pro Mix largest size bag (no fertilizer - too light weight) potting soil, mix it with 40 lb bag of Wal-Mart Potting Soil (no fertilizer - too heavy with sand) added a heaping shovel of peat moss, 2 cups lime and 2 cups 13-13-13, plus 1 cup of time release 20-20-20 and a cup of Alfalfa pellets, bowl of vermiculite (medium stainless steel).
Dang this might burn those brugs, looks too heavy on fertilizer now that I've written it down, but that was a giant size bag of Jungle Potting Soil. lol lol We'll see.
Judy
Thanks, I do spray all of mine with MG every time I water or mist them and I also add a little peroxide into the water and mist everyday.I did get some of the Bayer 2 n 1 Rose & Shrub Food today to add to the soil when I transplant it this evening and I see a few of the other little cuttings that also need to go up a size also...I will cross my fingers but I just wish I had a little more shade this heat is trying to melt them...This will definitely be a working holiday weekend...
Thanks for the info..have a great holiday weekend
Whiskers has nicely serrated leaves too. I'm getting so I feel that the leaves of brugs are a big part of why they are attractive.
Hello Brugie!!! You are right about those leaves, they don't dry out like a lot of the brugs and the shape is eye-catching.
vswilliams, you could get shade cloth at Lowe's and rig it up to give shade in the hotest part of the afternoon. See mention of this in Moodene's thread didicated to Kell, she removed her shade cloth to take the pictures.. I believe is how she put it. Ask her how, why etc. I live in the woods therefore have the brugs in dapple shade when the sun is the hottest.
Judy
Thanks I will try that..
Vickie
This one is a must on my replacement list.
Judy, Your Whiskers is beautiful.
I am so happy for you. She is sure a happy and healthy looking brug baby, so I think that your methods are working very well. :)
Thanks for sharing!
I agree that the leaves are quite important, especially since many brugs bloom in flushes.
Wow, Kris and Linda, you both have great pictures of Whiskers. Very nice.
Kris & Linda - WOW!!! I've got more to look forward to with my Whiskers judging from your pictures!! Mine has not experienced transplant shock at all which so pleases me.
You all convinced me!!! I just ordered a Whiskers from Country Gardens in Milan Florida. Can't wait to get it.
Linda
Judy my keyboard just about quit working from all the drool that is running down my face. That picture is fabulous. Makes me wish it was here now.
Linda
Linda,
That picture was taken in November 23, her buds continued to open in the house through January, with only indirect light..
Judy I received my Whiskers yesterday in the mail, she is planted and in a few days I will take a picture of her and post it. She is about a foot and a half tall, with only 2 little leaves at the top but did she ever have a root ball on her. I have her in the GH now hopefully she has put on a few more leaves over night. I know I am dreaming, but since I am dreaming maybe she has already Y'ed and has a couple of buds on her, oh heck lets go all the way, maybe she has a couple of blooms. Back to reality. I hope she is still alive. I better go check her out.
Linda
My kind of dreaming.....
Judy
She is still alive. All the other was just a dream.
I wish some other people would post pictures of their Whiskers on this thread. Earthling & MG99's pictures had me dreaming of a BIG Whiskers full of blooms. lol lol
I lost several files of some of my photos from last year. Whiskers was on those files Darn it. I did find this one though. This was taken at the end of October last year. Last year was my first year having Whiskers and it bloomed late in the year. So here is an end of the year photo...
Edit..Removed photo from link provided earlier

I am giving away the rest of my brugs...including Whiskers. I have many of them now since I had many cuttings from the one in the ground. I will miss them when they are blooming but will not miss all the work they take to get them to that point. We have been too hot and dry last summer and looks like this summer will be a repeat. Poor brugs are suffering in the heat even tho they are in shade all afternoon. I just came to the conclusion that life is too short to spend so much time catering to those plants. I gave away most last summer when I had hand surgery (twice) and knew I would be having problems. I kept 17, and those will be going this year..along with the 6 or so that I started from cuttings last fall.
Like I said, I will miss the blooms, but that was the only time I enjoyed having them..so may as well give them to someone who still has enthusiasm for them..
Kris
Kris, I know what you are talking about. I couldn't take care of mine last year due to the fractured leg. I was lucky to have someone that would water twice a day for me, but I'm cutting back too. I just don't know how far. Not to the extent you are, but only the special will be at my house next year with a few seedlings. That is if I'm lucky. I hope you find good homes for them. Bet our friend Carrie would take some. ;-)
