Cassia bicapsularis-Worley's?

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Good morning all,
I have 2 cassia bicapsularis, one the bright yellow, the other pale yellow. I think I may have read somewhere that the pale yellow won't come true from seed. Anyone know? These were given to me years ago and were probably seedlings. Are they variable? only reference I find to the pale yellow is Worley's. Would appreciate any info before trying the pale yellow seeds. I've posted same question in propagation, but as yet no response and noticed that I didn't see anyone from Ca. posting there so thought I'd try to cover a little more ground. Thanks

hiya wcgypsy,

We're growing a bunch of C. (Senna) bicapsularis and have found the Buttercream variant to reproduce from seed faithfully about 50% of the time which leads me to believe that your suspicion that they are indeed variable is correct. We've been sprouting seeds of this plant for about three years and it volunteers here as well. I'm a little partial to the brighter color, but the creamy one is also a beauty.

best to you,
don

Don, thanks VERY much, I took cuttings of the pale yellow this week, but somehow have the feeling they will do better from seed. I like both colors, but they were not flowering when I planted them years ago and so they are right next to each other and I really like the blending and alternating of the 2 colors. Have to find someplace on the property to do a hedge as such. I may have read in one of the posts about having to do boiling water over the cassia seed, but I'm too lazy to go back through and search...Must start taking notes for future ref! My neighbor grows her cassia alata from seed and says no hot water needed with those, they just pop right up. How have you done yours? Have only had one volunteer in about 15 or so years and I just dug it last week. I am thrilled to know that seeds of the pale yellow will possibly both colors. I'll just plant seeds from the pale yellow and get my "mixed
hedge" that way....
Sherry
