We will definitly need some pics of that or a link to an instruction sheet with pics
My First Successful Grafts!
Here you go this is a good site and the pics great takes you tho it step by step . i use to use this on my Roses years back id have 4 or 5 diff branches on one bush paul http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/citrus/budding/budding.htm
Awesome!!
Im going to try it with plumies.
That's a super interesting link, Paul. Thanks for sharing that. I've got to go through that site and read it carefully as I just skimmed it tonight.
I tried something new today, and I'm sold! It made grafting so much easier and faster. I used a staple gun! I had heard that this was a good method. Thanks, Paula! I could even use my fingers and just press the staples in to keep the pieces together. It was awesome.
Clare, is this simply to position the scion and free your hands?
I dont think youd get the needed pressure or retain it if you did from staples.
Id think they would tear through as the root stock pushes it upward.
Do you take the Stables out after the Graft Takes Paul
I have found that placing 2 pieces of electric tape on the root stock parallel to the cutting
and then pulling them till they stretch and sticking them to the scion creates nice pressure.
Then I wrap around the union.
The only drawback I have with tape is the pieces tend to slide and its soo annoying!!
I assume the staples end that syndrome.
Ill try it tomorrow
I like the 'V' cut as it doesnt slide.
Tonight I grafted another into my multi tree
Merry Christmas!! WOOT!!
So now its Mrs. Malestrom, Giant Aussie Orange, Madame Poni and Merry Christmas!!
I have 2 branches left, 1 shall be Lava Flow!!
My Dad use to Graft Apple Trees some times he would do a Whip Graft and use Wire to hold it there Paul
Paul, I think you can leaves the staples in or take them out. I'll probably take them out. I know some people use needles or pins too, but those never worked well for me. I know there are all sorts of different methods and tools to use for grafting, but I think I'm sold on this staple gun! LOL!
Michael, the tape slips and won't stick if there is a lot of sap flow too. Yes, staples definitely fix that. I hold the two pieces tightly together before stapling and then wrap with tape or string.
At what time of year would you quit grafting?
I will quit When temperatures start dropping consistently
It will be different depending on where you live
I also wont start again untill growth resumes agressively
There must be significant latex flow.
Grafts seem to take really well in my greenhouse, so if you have a greenhouse that is warm and humid in the wintertime, I wouldn't think you would be hindered. I think Luc of Florida Colors grafts year-round. I just grafted some more multi's today:-) They won't be healed until mid-September, which is a summer month around here.
How clever!!! Can you graft if the 2 ends are not equal in diameter?
Hi there, Kell! Yes, you can. I think the "V" graft works well if the scion is smaller than the root stock, but I've done a slant graft where the scion was smaller than the root stock. The root stock can be slightly smaller than the scion too. I think it works best if the two pieces are the same size, but if one is slightly bigger than the other, it can still take fine.
I have been experimenting with my 'cuts'
I actually prefer teh 'v' cut at this time as my success with it is wondeful.
Almost all of my slant grafts have slid as the root stock pushes the scion up and away no matter how tight I make it.
Ill try staples nails and 2x4s next lol!!
You guys are so good at all of this! I just love the idea of a multi colored tree. I may have to try that with my big tree from Armstrongs next summer.
THANKS
Good luck, Kell! I know you can do it!
Michael, Kukiat does a really awesome "V" graft. I'll post some pictures of his grafts tomorrow.
Only if you help me when the time comes, Clare!
You know I will, babe;-)
I just told someone this morning who needs help with her cuttings..... to ask Clare. She will steer you right and be so nice as she does it.
THANKS Clare!
I don't deserve the praise I get, but I'll take it! Sure, tell everyone to come on over. We are getting some brug lovers who are tired of all the high-maintenance and who want the fragrant flowers without the fuss! LOL!
