First nymphaea bloom

Stockton, CA(Zone 9a)

Look at your toads! They are so neat! I am envious. Apparently your pond is attractive to them, even if it is not to you. LOL How long will it take those eggs to hatch? That really takes away your choice of draining it, you would lose all your eggs. Looks like they made the decision for you. LOL

Nancy...I love your pictures! Apparently the wild life loves your pond. And the water doesn't look so bad either. A friend once told me to always remember that it's a pond and not an aquarium, so don't expect so much from it. That calms me down when it get a little pea-soup-ish. By tomorrow, you eggs will be wigglers, and small tadpoles the day after. Congrats!

I was wondering if you all had gotten a lot of rain from the storm, and I have only seen a few wondering toads here and there but looks like they really like your Nancy. I have came to the same conclusion that the pond is not always suppose to be crystal clear but so far mine is not too bad and I can still see the bottom but just a little murky especially after him moving yesterday. Both yours looks very good and I sometimes let my lily and flower blooms try to drop off naturally but if they get to bad looking I try to get them cut but not easy getting down far enough to cut them off....

(Zone 9a)

Thank you for your encouragement. The toads have since moved on, but I guess there'll be little tadpoles soon.

Mary, I am sorry to hear about your broken foot. That sounds painful. I hope it's healing fast.

Dundee, OH(Zone 5b)

sorry to hear about your foot, ouch!

Nancy, the wildlife sure are enjoying that pond, they wont take long to hatch at all, those tadpoles will hatch and be little toadies within a months time, enjoy watching them :)

(Zone 9a)

Yes, it is interesting. There are already little, bitty tadpoles swimming around. I've posted a fish question in another thread. If anyone has fish experience, I would appreciate your help.

The "threads of eggs" around the plants seem to be breaking down now.

Ocoee (W. Orlando), FL(Zone 9b)

Which kind of fish?

(Zone 9a)

Fan tailed goldfish. They may be spawning, but I want to make sure they aren't overeating toad eggs and getting sick.

Ocoee (W. Orlando), FL(Zone 9b)

Most likely spawning....eggs usually don't make the fish sick, although sometimes you'll see temporary bubbles around the surface from extra protein in the water.
If your fish are spawning, they will attempt to eat their own eggs, so give the eggs a good hiding space, or remove them to an aquarium.

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

What a treat, I have been hoping mine would but so far I have not seen any signes...I read a little about them spawning on a fish site that was very informative and they said you might need to remove them or make sure they had plants that the eggs would be layed in to keep the other fish from eating them..
Sorry about your foot there is nothing worse, when we use to rodeo my horse stepped on mine twice and broke several toes and that was bad enough..
I have another bloom getting closer to blooming and the pads are getting so big the biggest I have seen them..

(Zone 9a)

Mine hasn't rebloomed. I don't see any buds, either, but one bloom was nice.

Stockton, CA(Zone 9a)

ouch, broken toes and feet! Hurts to even think about it! Hope you heal quick Mary.
I just finished reading your other threads Nancy, I am so glad you posted the pics of the frog egg strings, really useful info. I had no idea what they looked like. Hopefully I will see them in my own pond someday and thanks to your picture, will not wind them around a stick and toss them out. LOLOL
Vickie, I have another bud ready to open too, but my pads don't seem any bigger. Are you getting more pads and they are bigger or just existing ones getting bigger?

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

I have a bunch that are huge and I believe they are older ones but a lot of new ones coming up along side the new bud, it has just came to the surface so I don't think it will be long. Last year it just was starting out and I only had a couple blooms all sumer and the pads did not get as big but this year it has produced many more blooms and pads already and the summer is just getting started..I have another lily I added last year and it has still not done much so I am hopeful I will find out what kind it is if it ever blooms..
