I'd like to start a thread (I was inspired by Frostweed's great new threads on Texas Native plants!!) on plants that are deer resistant and still do well with our Texas heat ( we had several weeks in a row of temps over 100 last summer--up to 107!). And yes, we all know that deer will eat the bark off trees if hungry enough, but the emphasis here is on the word resistant--not "deer proof."
I think it will be wonderful for someone who is just planting his or her gardens to just look at the list and "pick and choose."
I'm looking forward to learning what to plant myself.
Please include a picture of the plant if possible.
I'll start out with bulbine, which is one of my favorites. (B. frutescens/ B.caulescens) grows to about 2 feet when flowering; likes full sun; can freeze in our coldest weather, so plant in more protected area; looks a bit like aloe vera to me
Deer resistant plants for our h.o.t. Central Texas weather
Hello Connie-W, I hope you don't mind my putting this here, but I think it might be helpful. This is a list put out by The Native Plant Society of Texas or NPSOT.
I also put the link in the color threads sticky at the top of the Texas forum.
List of deer resistant plants.

I think that your idea is very good, but fortunately, or not, I don't have to deal with deer,
Squirrels are another story, they love to eat everything and dig up plants, but I love them anyway. Good luck with your thread.
Josephine.

Thanks, Frostweed! I guess you read that you were my inspiration...plus the fact that I'm trying to put in a yard that won't be devoured by the deer here. My front levels are a good "testing ground" for what is deer resistant here because my yard was (so the old timers here tell me) the morning and evening path for deer for about 30 years...AND the huge area under my deck (that I just enclosed with stone) was the birthing place of fawns for that same time period. I love animals but little pockets of deer inside a huge community does not work, alas.
Connie
Thank you Connie, There should be a lot of people in the same situation as you.
It looks like you live in a very interesting area, maybe some day we will meet.
Did you find the list helpful?
Josephine.
A just plain old great list of plants--resistant to deer or not. I've been lookin' for a good list of all the native muhlys and thats about the best I've seen Josephine.Thank you--you've cleared up alot of questions for me.
Debbie
Frostweed....I just got in from planting (it's something I'm doing each day after school is out) and will check the list now.

Okay, I'm back. Wow...what invaluable info! Thanks so much. I love the author's idea of confusing the deer with all the strong scents. (I assume the classification of plants into types 1-4 and using multiples of some types is her original idea.) I planted lots of rosemary and marigolds, and I don't think they like to smell either, so I think I"m on the right track. I'll print out her list at work and begin to plan with it. I also plan to email her with thanks.

You might want to check and see if they have some advice that might be useful to you.
Josephine.
