After 10 years my daughter will be having her third baby in September. What I'd like to know is if it's proper to have a shower for her. Some say only for the first baby. Is this correct?
Thanks,
Nett
Baby Shower Question
That's the way it is here, nett. I'm not sure after 10 years if that counts as starting over (would for me LOL!!!)
Well, it probably depends on how strictly your friends (or hers) abide by the etiquette rules, which do generally restrict showers to first babies. Our social circle has deliberately ignored that rule, however.
When I had my daughter (3rd baby, first girl), I was blessed to be given two baby showers, one by co-workers and one by church friends. Their gifts helped us have a really nice wardrobe of baby clothes, and some baby things (it was 7 years after 2nd son was born), which I would not have been able to afford on my own.
I have also been able to help give showers for moms (and sometimes dads), some of which were for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th babies. It was a given that we wanted to celebrate the joy of the new/impending arrival, regardless of whether or not it was their first born.
Congratulations nett!
Baby items can change alot in ten years....and some things that old may not be as reliable or safe for a new baby...like thermometers or pacifiers. And I agree that a shower should be to celebrate a new life, not just the firstborn. It would be great to get the older children involved with planning or gifts, to sort of ease into the transition of adding a new littler brother or sister.
excellent point Bucky!!!!
Hi Nett,
I have known people who have had baby showers for the 3rd, and 4th child, myself included. Besides its always fun to see everyone and have a great time.
Etiquette-schmetiquette. Good manners is doing what would be most comfortable for other people. If your daughter needs help getting stuff together for the upcoming addition to her family, then a baby shower is the easiest way to do so. Babies are expensive, whether it's your first or your twenty-second. I say go for it.
I've been to many showers for baby 3 or 4. Usually there is a large time span between the children or the baby was an unexpected surprise and the mother has already given away many of the things she will need.
I had a shower for my own mother 16 years ago. There is 21 years between my youngest sister and I. The good thing was that I got all the best hand me downs (I bought them)for my kids!
Nett,
Go for it! Times they are a changing!

GO FOR IT! Your daughter will get some help with baby supplies and you will get a chance to share the joy with friends! Sounds like a win win win situation to me! And anyone who is uptight enough to worry about whether it is the first child or the fiftith child would probably be to uptight to attend anyway!
Thanks to all who responded to this post. I feel the same as the majority of you do. We'll go for it and have loads of fun and she'll get things she can use also.
Nett
P.S. This will be my 4th grandchild and she will be the 2nd girl. Her name will be Jade Elisbeth. I can hardly wait!
Congratulations Nett! ( And your daughter and her husband, too, of course!) I'm a secretary at a church and we have showers all the time for 2nd, 3rd, etc., babies- ESPECIALLY if there is a time span! It's a great idea that Bucky had about having the other children play an active part in the shower. I'm sure they are both excited and yet tenative, too, wondering what changes will occur in the family!!
So, make this shower a special one! It'll be a lot harder for your daughter to do the birth thing and such all over again after ten years!!
Blessings to you all!
