Gordon Hawks Giant Panama seeds sprouting!!

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Hey folks,
I think its day 5 now,
Day 1 - I soaked them all in a hot water / chem bath for a night and put them all in a seed tray in sterile soil on my heat pad.
Day 2 - I let them sit a day in that and then moved them to regular potting soil as the sterile has too much peat and was soaked. This was intentional as I wanted them to continue soaking a lil longer.
Day 3 - I peeled the husks edge and applied a little madness, then placed them back on the heat pad.
Day 4 - they sat.
Day 5 - I pulled them and found root sprouts up to 1 inch and one had 2 trailer roots already!! WEEEE-HOOOO!!!
I then moved them to peat pots in a mix of 1/3 potting soil 2/3 large grain sand and perlite.
At this rate ill have them in 6 inch pots by Sunday LOL!!
I figure 2nd week of June itll be 1 gallon pots.
Remind me. ;^)

Jack and the bean stalk seeds? REALLY NOW!!

Gordon these seeds are amazing!!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Congrats, Mike! I noticed mine starting to sprout also! Cool!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

A little madness huh.......? That must have been the trick. LOL

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

I cannot give the definition of the term 'Madness' its a secret LOL!! ;^)

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

We have meds here for "that" condition, Michael...LOL

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Calling Dr. Malestrom...Dr. Malestrom to E.R....

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Well Dr MAlestrom...
Sounds great... I'm happy they are doing so well for you.. most were sitting in opened pods awaiting such an intervention from me.. and my 20' stick with a forked area at the end... for setting behind the seed pod ..twisting and snapping of the little end it was on...
I've been neglecting starting mine... as I've been getting the roof set up.. and now it's warmenough to get them up the ladder.. through the hatch.. the 120 lb pots are dificult on the ladder ... not to mention the hatch is the same size every time I go through it with them.. [ about 48" diagional ] so the leggy winter growth under the HID lighting is gathered together and clear packing tape is used to cinch them together to the hatch size..
it is almost like a plumeria orgy.. getting them up and planted... I , as the lower person on the ladder hatch transfer.. end up covered in a sticky white mess.. from the occasionally scraped leaf or branch.. but I got all the big ones through today.. and replanted in the larger planters..
Great rotation of soil mix you have... I too gave new soil to them in their summer roof planters.. well not really new.. but the rotated15 year old potting soil.. with every ammendment given over the decades in there with them.. I could perhaps mention all of these .. but there's not enough space in one dave's posting cell.. but they all got a good dose of new cow manuer.. well decomposed and dehydrated any way.. not really new..
Well we'll be loooking for the 1 gal posting... and the later inflo hooray posting.. come labor day... Gordon

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Wow Gordon,
I cant imagine carrying all that to the rooftop.
I go from basement to backyard with lots of help.
Ill be repotting most of my babies as I believe the containers are too deep on some.
Ill be removing the bottom 1/2 of the mix and cutting it again with coarse sand and or lava rock. Ill leaved the top 1/3 rich and the bottom 2/3 faster draining.
Ya blooms soon on these lol maybe by vetrans day eh? :^P

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Gosh, Gordon, that is a lot of work for you. I sure hope you have some help. I can't wait to see pictures of yours this summer!

Michael, with seedlings of mine, they go right from a community container to individual one-gallon containers as soon as they have their first or second pair of true leaves. I have found that, the more room that you give them, the faster that they will grow big. Seedlings have that tap root which needs a lot of space.

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

My repotting was meant about cuttings.
I agree about the seedlings.
Most of mine were in 3's by summers end last year

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Ah, I see. Sorry about that, Chief!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

I helped some of these little fellas off with their coats yesterday. They are huge! Thanks, Gordon!

Clare.. goog going...
Great looking sprouts... looks like 100% germination.. or were there even more planted in that little mass planting.. [ I can't imagine there was room for more in it.. keep the roots warm after you repot... and we'll see the flowers from these in record time also...
seeing the success.. makes climbing the trees and secureing the pods /seeds...well worth the effort..Thanks
Gordon

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Mine have all shed the shell as well.
With a lil help from me heh... I hate to wait so I spray and peel... its sooo fun!!!
They are still huge!!
Out to filtered light today with them!
Theyre all in peat pots and pushing out the bottoms!! WOOT!!
Pics to follow soon!!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Thanks, Gordon! I'm sure glad you didn't hurt yourself climbing up the trees, but I'm grateful that you did! You are right: 100% germination. These little babies are in my mini greenhouse and as happy as can be with the heat that they are getting. I'll take another picture in a few days. They are already taller and greener since my last picture.

Can't wait to see pics, Michael! We may have to do some comparison as they grow! Yours will be getting a special cocktail, I'm sure, and mine will be grown here in the California sun;-)

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Two days later from the first picture:

Yours are a tad ahead of mine.
After mine sprouted I accidentally left them off the heat mat.
They stalled... oopsies!!
They are now outside and doing well it was 95 today phew!!.......
Pics to come but not yet.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

That is some pretty awesome growth. I've never propagated plumies from seed so this thread has been fascinating. a

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

I really feel that the heat of this small greenhouse that I have set up is really helping them out a lot. There is some humidity in there too which is just what they need along with the heat.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

LOL, Clare, your greenhouse conditions sound just like our outdoor conditions around here.

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Ill be watering mine in a few minutes.
The heat today and yesterday were unbelievable as was the humidity.
Im soo glad as It woke up my aussies and Scott Pratts!! YAY!!!
Back to the upper 70s this week but everyones awake!!
2 are pushing the tap root out of the top of thier peat pots LOL!!!
It went all the way down and curled back up. heh.... ready for 6 inch pot id say heh....

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Ardesia, you are probably right:-) Many of my special cuttings are still on the heat mat in the mini-greenhouse. Our nights are still quite cool, and the temperature drop at night is enough to welcome rot. I just found two rotted cuttings that had started to root in the big greenhouse but were put outside when I took the greenhouse down. There wasn't room for them in the mini-greenhouse, and they rotted.

Congrats on the good weather, Michael! Those seedlings of Gordon's are fast growers!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh my, what adorable babies, Clare. I always love the baby pictures. Maybe I should try some seeds. These are such fat cut babies too.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Hi Kell, someone was supposed to send you some of these, but if you don't get any, I can send you some of my seedlings when they are big enough to travel. Did you send an email to GordonHawk? He is the one that collected the seeds in Panama and has shared them with many people. These are fat, cute little babies, aren't they? They already have their first pair of true leaves. I'll take another picture in a day or two for all to see.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Really? Who? No, I didn't ask Gordon for any, I know him from Brugs Forum. But I hate to bug him. They are cute though. LOL. So have you seen a picture of the mother plant? I remember Gordon had huge plants in his pics from his trip.

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

OH Kell... don't be silly... not a bother to send seeds your way.. drop an address to me... GordonHawk@gmail.com I try to keep the seed requests there.. as it is a static pile I can refer to... and manage better .. if they are hither and yond often a person or address gets piled in the backlog of life here...
Just put me down for the first cutting of your red or blue Brug...
I'm glad everone has enjoyed the seeds .. In looking for some beachfront there... a parcel with a 100 year old plumeria.. certainly gets a red star for consideration... but I'm still looking .. Gordon

That is such a gorgeous flower! Kell, take Gordon up on his generous offer and send him your address! You want some of these babies in your collection!

GordonHawk, I think someone should name their hybrid after you! They probably self-seeded and will look like the parent, I imagine. Lovely!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Remember? Kell, I said I would share w/ you. I planted all my 15 seeds, since I didn't hear back, but I can send a seedling later on. Way cool, one of the guys at my little P.O. is from Panama, and I have promised him one also. Gordon, you are all over the place with these seeds!

Kell, just say the word.

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Gordon,
Why didnt you tell me you wanted a blue or red Brug?
Im tired of mine, I was going to toss them out.
HAHAHAAAAAA.... J/K man... lol!!
I WISH I HAD A BLUE OR RED!!
I do have many many brugs though buddy,
Ill make a list for your picking. ;^)
Ill post the list then anyone can PM me for them.
I dont want to do it here.
This is the Panama Hawk Thread!! ;^)

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Here is a picture of Gordon's seedlings today on the right compared to Celadine seedlings on the left. I started the Celadine seedlings for grafting purposes on the same day.

I accidentally knocked off a couple of Cotyledons off of Gordon's seedlings when I was working today (clumsy me). Does anyone know if this will affect the seedling's growth? I hope not!

Thumbnail by Clare_CA
Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Clare if it still has 1 cotyledon itll do ok.
Itll grow leaning to one side from here out but thatll be your reminder LOL!!! J/K!!
It should be fine.
Heres my Hawks next to celadine seedlings
all planted the same day.
Remarkable they are indeed!!!

LOL, Michael. You are so funny. You had me going there for a second with that leaning thing! LOL! Yes, remarkable, especially compared to the Celadine seedlings. They are giants. Thanks for the info. about the one cotyledon, Michael:-) I feel better now. Your seedlings look great!

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Its 12:33 am and pouring absolutely flooding rains.
I ran out to get my seed trays quick.
The plumie tray was full of water but ok, I brought it in.
My tomatoe and peppers are awash, ill have to fish for them tomorrow dangit.
My datura and fanccy flowers are all awash too... sheeeesh!!
Slipped my little mind.. oh well, I can always buy more tomatoe and peppers
But I had all my favorites going from seeds. Maybe theyll all be piled up in a corner of dirt somewhere lol!! Live and learn eh? Im expecting Noah to float through here any moment.
There goes a whale....... sheesh!!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Ouch, so sorry Michael! I bet everything will be fine in the morning and green as ever.

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Ussually is!! 8^)
Im hoping too lol
I hope I sleep enough tonight to be able to do some gardening tomorrow.
We shall see!!

Crestview, FL(Zone 7b)

Those are indeed HUGE compared to the Celedine seedlings. Is there a picture anywhere of Gordon's pod parent?

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

I believe Gordon posted all the photos of the tree, roots, blossom and cliff already,
Ill try to find it.

http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=2236249
There are several other pics available
I cant find them all right now but that thread has a link to his entire trip.
Its well worth paging through, I enjoyed it immensly.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

So did I, Michael esp. since I will probably only get to visit there thru Gordon's pictures. I would so love beachfront property too. We all will have to invite ourselves to Gordon's new house on the beach so we can collect our own plumie seeds. LOL.

THANKS Gordon, I think I may need some of those super seeds. LOL I like BIG!

Oh Voss, sometimes you knock and sadly there is no one home. LOL. Now I need to go look for your post. I also flit a lot so my attention is here, there and in the end nowhere. But THANKS to you too!

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Well.. Kell...
likeing them big... silly...send me your address.. I'll send you some of them... big they are .. and I hear fast also...I've had your addreess .. perhaps... but that means very little ... as as part of the new security measures inacted here .. I can't remember anything... so send it to me at
GordonHawk@gmail.com .. Gordon

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Fast isnt the word
Good Golly....
I predicted 6 inch pots by yesterday,
They drank all the water in thier lil peat pots overnight and were wilting!
I put them into 1 gallon pots this evening.
These are faster, larger and stronger than anything ive seen yet!
Ive grown over 100 seedlings already and nothing even comes close to these.
I will predict 40 to 48 inches by December. ;^)
