Red bloom on a spruce

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Myself and my neighbour have spruce trees with red blooms on them. We have never seen this before..they look like upright cones.
Can anyone tell me what these are and why we have them this year.
His trees are 30 years old and mine is about 6 years old.

Ever notice cones on the trees before? These are the cones before they are pollinated, when they first appear. They will turn brown shortly.

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

They will also turn from erect to pendulous as they mature

Thank you both..I have been looking at website about Norway Spruce..and found that these are the female cones.

Yes we have seen lots of cones but only ever noticed the brown ones later in the season or ones left on the trees from last years season. Both of us have neve noticed these bright red ones. Also we had a lot of yellow pollen blowing for about a week in the high winds we have been having.
Maybe we are just taking more time to observe now that we are growing older. LOL.

Cheers,
Carol
