I think I put too much 16-16-16 fertilizer around a flowering crabapple tree ( Robinson Crabapple) this spring . It has a 2 1/4" trunk and is probably 9 to 10 feet high. Many of the leaves are dead although there are some green ones. It looks pretty sick.
Is there anything that I can do to try to save it?
Can I save my crabapple ?
Is it a new tree or an established one? If it's new, it might be transplant shock and perhaps it will recover. If it's been there a while, you probably fried the roots with Nitrate but it still might recover. Or perhaps it's something else altogether, like frost or flood damage. Regardless, consider it in ICU right now, and don't expect miracles. Flush the excess Nitrogen out of the soil with a deep watering and hold your breath.
Next time, if you ABSOLUTELY MUST fertilize at all (why?), be sure not to exceed one pound N per 1000 square feet. And watch out for weedkillers too. Be sure to read directions carefully, always.

Yes, how long ago was it planted?
Yes, stop the fertilizer, now!
Is it a grafted tree? If so, I'm wondering if it's perhaps poorly grafted, as some flowering crabapples are...
