Quail eggs in the incubator

Graham, NC(Zone 8a)

Hi ya'll,

Just put 108 Wisconsin (jumbo) Bobwhite quail eggs in my incubator. So, hopefully in about 23-24 days, I'll have some chicks. Will post pictures when they start hatching.

Please do , I will be looking to see them. I think they are so beautiful and their call is so sweet! Do you sell them?

Graham, NC(Zone 8a)

Just candled the eggs tonight (8th day). Out of the 108 eggs, 4 were infertile and I dropped 1 (of course it was fertile...). And had 2 with what looked like a blood ring around the middle of each egg. Will keep updating.

Hi ya'll :)

Just took the quail eggs (101) out of the automatic turner and laid them on the wire floor of the incubator. Had movement in several of the eggs. Blooders are ready and waiting. Will have some pictures when they start hatching.

What do you do with that many quail? Do you have any pictures of others you may have?

Graham, NC(Zone 8a)

Halnik,

I plan on keeping some for breeding. Some for personal consumption and if I have enough to hatch, I'll release some on a pistol and rifle club land that I belong to. We don't allow any type of hunting on this property. We've been in the middle of a high power rifle match and had to stop the match because deer walked out onto the firing range. Lots of wildlife there. I don't have any other quail at this time, but plan on more later.

I guess we'll hear any day now that they're hatching. Good luck

Hey Y'all, hows everything going? Got Quail yet? cant wait to see them! Ive been thinking about getting some myself and reseeding the area here. WE never here their call here. I wonder sometimes if they arent becoming extinct in my part of Georgia!
This weekend we were travelling to Athens Ga., and had to stop the car, because a whole Brood of baby wild turkeys and their parents were crossing, there had to be at least 30 poults! So good to see them.

Graham, NC(Zone 8a)

Just checked them a while ago and heard some chirping...hopefully, won't be long now. "E"...I agree with you. I haven't heard Bobwhite calls in ages. Thanks Hal...I appreciate it.

Oh its been so long since Ive seen Quail!!! Thanks for the Pics , they are so pretty and healthy looking! I do wish we could get them to raise here in the wild again! their call is so wonderful and it reminds me of when I was a little girl! Sweet sound in the evening , along with Mournin Doves!! Awwwww, Sounds of the South!!!

Graham, NC(Zone 8a)

I agree with you Eufaula...I haven't heard a wild Bobwhite call since I was about 18-19. I used to get up early morning at my G-mother's and stand on the porch hearing several coveys ( that spelled right?? lol) call back and forth to each other. Ahhhh...the "good ole days"
BTW...got 48 Georgia Giant Bobwhite eggs incubating, due about the 20th. While I was at the gamebird farm that I got the eggs from, I heard a Bobwhite out in the woods call to the ones in the cages...so cool!!

I still here them here, but nowhere as often as I used to..It used to be so common around here..Usually when I would leave the house I would often have to stop the car for mama quail and babies to cross the dirt road down around the ditch and pond..Now it is a rare treat for this to happen..I love their call..We still have many doves and also at night I sit and listen to the Whippoorwill's calling.. They will answer everytime, along with the owls..As Eufaula said.."Awwww, sounds of the south"..

If everything works right (mainly me....lol) I'll be putting them in their brand new pen either Sat. or Sun. Depends on how long it takes me to build it...lol Pictures to come. Then I have to get ready for about 45-50 more due to start hatching in about 2 more weeks.

Ok Ya'll...

Here's some pictures of the quail pen. Its 4' X 8' with a 2' x 3' enclosed shelter on the end. It's 18" tall on the open end and 23" on the high side of the covered section. The front and back doors are 15" X 36" (I can put the brooder boxes directly in the pen). and the entire end of the open area is a door. The majority of the pen was made from Juniper wood (white cedar) and treated lumber. All wire is 1/2" hardware cloth.

NCffp163, What do you put in the dust box, sand or something else special???

Camilla, GA(Zone 8a)

I use clean sand from my dirt road in my dirt boxes that I have for all my chicks, keets and other babies..

Larkie

Graham, NC(Zone 8a)

"E",

I'm using good ole "Carolina red dirt"....lol I've got some white play sand I may try tho.

Eric

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Yep! thats me too! This 'ole Red Clay dirt and a little "Wally World" Play sand! Have y'all ever used that Diamataceous Earth , I keep hearing about?

Graham, NC(Zone 8a)

"E"

I've read a lot of stuff about "D" earth. I personally haven't used it and not sure if I will. Some swear by it and others swear against it. Here's a link from "That Quail Place" forum about it. Hope it helps y'all.

I just found this post, your quail pen is wonderful. My dh is hatching some quail eggs for a couple of friends and decided to raise some for himself and is looking for ideas on building a quail pen. So far he has hatched out 8 bob whites with the first hatch and 23 this go round and still has several in the incubaters. I will show him your pen tonight when he gets home from work. I'll take some pictures of his little guys later today and post them. I also sent him a copy of your link to his email address, what a wonderful site. Thanks for posting the information.

Wonderful pen!

I understood that food-grade D.E. should not cause problems, but some people make the huge mistake of using the pool-grade kind, which has lots of other stuff in it, including carcinogens. You're also supposed to use a mask when applying, as you should with *any* dust. I also thought that D.E. was not effective as a wormer simply because moisture renders it useless... and that for the same reason (unless you go and inhale it on purpose) tiny or residual amounts of it would not damage the lungs. Obviously, there are two camps on this one.

Freedom, PA(Zone 6a)

I had to sneak up on these babys, they are like little roadrunners when spooked. They are so tiny. I think these are called Bob Whites.

Thanks y'all for the compliments, I really appreciate it. I threw some play sand in with the red dirt this evening, so I'll see if they like it or not. The eggs haven't started pipping yet, but should be soon.

Cathy, tell your dh to check out www.thatquailplace.com Theres tons of info on gamebirds there. Yes'm...looks like Bobs to me.

Graham, NC(Zone 8a)

Back y'all :)

Got up this morning and had 11 chicks in the incubator and then 2 more before lunch time. 1 more about 2:00. Got over 1/2 dozen thats pipping now. I've put 7 in the brooder so far. Should be able to put the rest in as soon as they dry some more.
