my husband is bringing me back either cuttings or entire plants from another state, only id rather have cuttings, in order for him to have room for more of a variety on the way home, like i said in the rhodie forum, my idea of starting from a cutting is in a glass on the window sill, that is how i have started different types of plants in the past and if this can be done, where on the branches do the cuttings need to be taken from.
thank you

Help!!how easy is it to start rhodedendrons from cuttings???
I just did some research on starting rhodies from cuttings and decided not to do it. They can take a long time to root. I also don't think they will root in water. From what I remember they are a bit more tricky than that. I'd opt for a plant or two and try air layering it instead...and even that can take a while. You can start them from cuttings if you are patient, most people aren't patient enough...but, maybe you're one in a million!! =^)
Try doing a google search on Rhododendron propagation and you'll find the info you need. If you can't find it let me know and I'll see if I saved anything from my search.

Tammy, we started a few rhodos from some pruning we did. Rather than put in water, we just stuck them in pots of dirt, and they have all done well. I just gave two to my neighbour and they are transplanted and looking very good. They have been in pots outside for at least two years, and seem to have done okay. We tended to ignore them quite a bit, so not sure if that helped or not!!! LOL
Glenda
wow, thanks ggd, how big were the cuttings, did you strip'em back or just like you said, stuck them in dirt, and was there anything mixed with the dirt?
tammy
The cuttings were probably 2-3 feet, and we just stuck them in good old dirt, nothing added. The pots were black, and I think that helps things when it is warm, and the dirt stays warm from the sun. Then leave them alone and see how they do!!!!

Am I missing something here? Glenda claims she is rooting 3-foot branches of Rhododendron by jamming them into dirt and walking away? Doesn't anyone else wonder about this?
Tammy, unless you're an expert (or know one) if I were you I'd definitely opt for bringing back rooted plants. Take very small ones and cram as many of them as possible into every nook and cranny of your baggage and your clothing. Your attempt to root the cuttings could be a total failure and you'd be left with nothing.
