I may just need to get me one of these!
#AV4ST - 4 IN African Violet - Saintpaulia Tongwensis

This African Violet is the original variety as found in the Usambara Mountain range in Africa. It is closely related to the Saintpaulia ionantha and has a lighter color blue in its flowers.

Silver Spring, MD

I did see it Lory. I'm still thinking about it. I recently purchased Blue Boy at Violet Gallery. One of the original 10. He is just getting ready to bloom.

Blue Boy is one of the Original African violets
Tongwensis not one of the orginal 10 but a species !

Dark green, pointed, narrow, very thick, hairy, slightly serrated/some red back. May appear variegated with mottled pattern over main veins. Usually upright single crown, rarely suckers. Standard. Saintpaulia species

and I thought it was cool :) So I ordered it...Nice to have something close to an original :)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Yes ! There are like 30 Species in First Class ! I use to have a lot of them ! I might buy this one. It's important to keep the Species alive too !
Then there are the Original Ten !
Blue Boy Sported to Blue Girl which made the first Girl !
I have Blue Boy hoping it sports me a girl. lol
fixed some spelling lol

Okay guys, what's the original 10? The first 10 cultivars or what??

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Selective Gardner is soo expensive!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

BLUE BOY is not a species but is one of the "Ten Originals" developed by Armacost and Royston Nursery of Los Angeles, CA. They obtained African violet seed from Germany and England during 1927 and worked with the new plants for eight years before releasing ten different plants for sale.
The top" Ten Originals " developed by Armacost and Royston Nursery of Ca. are 1. Admiral,2. Amethyst, 3.Blue Boy, 4.Commodore, 5. Mermaid 6. Neptune, 7. Number 32,8. Norseman, 9. Sailor Boy, and 10. Viking.
They grown by African violet seed from Germany and England during 1927 and worked with the new plants for eight years before releasing ten different plants for sale
Speicies the S. means Saintpaulia which is the Genus and the Latin name (always a small letter) which identifies a specific species group.

You can fine the First ten AV's in First Class and also all the Species in First Class too. Some with really cool pictures !

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Oh I have admiral :)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Silver Spring, MD

I can't wait to see the blooms on Blue Boy. The plant I have has a very distinctive leaf as well. It is pointed at the tip and the center vein is lighter green. It is also very soft to the touch. I will be repotting this morning and setting down any lost leaves if anyone is interested.

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

These are so cool.I love the vintage plants and think its important to keep them going.

There was a thread going about the vintage plants(having a vintage bank or something like that) but for the life of me I cant find it.

Nana if you have a broken leaf from Blue Boy.Please keep me in mind:)

Silver Spring, MD

I sure will Jan. Do you want me to send the leaf or would you like a plantlet is I can grow some?

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Thanks Nanna.. Could you put a leaf down for me please. This newbie doesn't have the greatest luck.

I have a leaf pot of "The King" that Allison sent to me,just waiting on ears if you would like one!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh about Selective gardner being too exspencive... You get what you pay for and Annabelle to get a plant full of deep blue belles, Bell flowers you don;t see often on AV's well worth the cost of $12.00 ! And their shipping cost are low. Like I think it was snow said she got two shipped for $7.95 where are you going to get two large 4 inch plantsn named in full bloom for only $ 7.95 shipping ??
Plus their miniature, and large, 6 inch all their plants come blooming ! Make terrific gifts ! At the Holidays I'd like to get a couple more red blooming Av's from them. I love the red and white blooming plants for the Holiday season !
I feel for what you get from them you get your money's worth ! I've only ordered once, and got my gift from Eunice from them but have seen other people plants from them ! edit for spelling and to say they sell some nice Begonias, foliage plants, Miniature poinsettias , growing suplies leaves and more !
Hek I have spent $5.75-$10.00 plus for plants from other vendors to get the smallest sometimes dead plants and always shipping to high $$ you get what you pay for most of the time lol

You see, there are lots of choices.

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

I agree with Allison :) They have fabulous plants :) and ebay can be a crap shoot :)

I bought myself another annabelle and I ordered this one also :)

I would be happy to share leaves of her with you Allison :) when she comes in :)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh WOW super Lorry Thanks so much ! Most plants you buy from Ebay not all Most and most from Vendors are too small to think about sharing a leaf or even having a safe leaf to put down for insurance.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Lorry did you get your new Annabelle and Saintpaulia Tongwensis yet ! Pictures please :))
My new Annabelle from Eunice has a couple suckers ! And a couple of my Annabelle leaves down have babies ! So I will have some nice Annabe;;es to share by Fall . I was real excited to find them.

I don't have any of the original 10 but am growing the species saintpaulia 'Rupicola' very endangered in the wild.

http://www.cincyzoo.org/Conservation/GlobalConservation/AfricanViolets/africanviolets.html

Photo of my young plant recently planted in a 4" pot. The leaves feel so good on Rupicola....sorry no bloom now.

Very Interesting SR. where did you get your Rupicola?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

That's a nice plant Snow ! They are fun to grow and good to share and keep the Species and vintage from getting lost !

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

S. rupicola (S 10) 1964 (B. Burtt) Single light-medium blue, three or more per peduncle. Light-medium green, heart-shaped, soft, smooth, glossy, velvety/light back. Leaves sometimes thick. Multi-crowned standard or bushy trailer. Saintpaulia species
Have you had it long ! nice plant !

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I got a couple leaves of s.Rupicola from a friend. I find this species to be as easy or easier to grow than any other violet and can grow into a nice full large trailer. So true, if or when the species are lost in the wild, the only ones we will have are those preserved by collectors. If anyone is interested, I have leaves I can start for new plantlets in spring. Also, will have just leaves available anytime during safe shipping season.

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Snow,Beautiful Plant!! Would you please put me down for leaves or a plantlet in the spring? I would love to try one of these. Hopefully I can find something to tempt you with : )
Nancy

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Sure, cedarnest! I'll be happy to. Remind me...I'll start 4 or 5 spare leaves now since I just groomed my plant.

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Thanks Snow.You are a Dear : )

Silver Spring, MD

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Wonderful Wonderful !!! Keepem sharing :)) OK who's growing one of the first double pinks from Lyon's :)) After all those blue shades, violets... then there came pink ! But wow when the double pink came out in 1953 people went nuts leaves sold for $10.00 each ! No Ebay needed and that was a lot of money in thos days :)) I was not even born hehe but I'd love to have one of the plants ! Gosh African violets are amazing !

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I posted this other place but had to do it again.
All the first AV's were blue shades Blue Boy being the first.

Blue Boy (41) 1948 (Armacost & Royston) Single dark violet-blue. Ovate, pointed. Standard

In the fifty's Lyon's came out with the first double pink it brought lots of money ! I forget which double pink it was anyone know ?? :)) There were three in one year.
If my memory does not fail me the first double pink came out from Lyon's in 1953 three plants were named by Lyon. I think it was Double pink Cheer but the name might be wrong but I do recall the first Doube pink was from Lyon !
Double Pink Cheer (186) 10/29/1954 (L. Lyon) Double pink. Quilted. Large
Double Pink Cloud (187) 10/29/1954 (L. Lyon) Double dark pink. Quilted. Large
