Acer Japonicum Fernleaf Full Moon & "Patio Maple" ?

SE Mass, MA(Zone 6b)

Well - tonight I'm returning the "white tipped/blanched" weeping norway spruce. This morning, since the sun is out for the first time in 11 DAYS, i went to my favorite independent nursery. oh. i shouldn't have done that. i'm supposed to be buying EVERGREENS, but there's this very tiered/japanese shaped Full Moon Japanese Maple there - I LOVE IT! 2 gal pot is $59, 10 gal pot is $149. Can't do the bigger one - the smaller ones have a better shape in my opinion. I think it's the least expensive Japanese maple they have - most of them are $240 & up. Also saw a creamy/red/green "Patio Maple" at Lowes today - it was small and expensive. Very pretty variageted leaf though. I'm a sucker for that variagation...

Anyone have experience with these particular trees? Next to Beeches, Japanese Maples are my 2nd favorite. I'm already forming a plan to return there this afternoon and buy that tree.

Why did I go there??!!!!

Don't buy anything that expensive, or anything at all for that matter, unless it has a full botanical name on the label. "Patio maple" tells you nothing at all.

The Acer Japonicum Fernleaf Full Moon "Aconitifolium" is fully tagged and at a premium/fancy nursery here in town...that's $69...they sell $600 trees there - very nice stock.

The "patio" japanese maple was at Lowes with no latin tag at all. Was just wondering if anyone had heard of it - if it was $30 or less, I'd buy it! But I wouldn't buy it for $79!

The patio maple is probably just a seedling. If it has a graft, it could be anything--unknown cultivar, a propagator's reject, or a buyer's reject. The thing is, if it's healthy, and grows well, is beautiful, and you like it, who cares how much it cost or what it is named? But I would make up a name before I would call it Lowe's goofy "Patio" maple.
