Crabapples and Junipers?

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

I have a ton of Juniper trees [cedars] in my yard. I know you can't grow cedars with "regular" apple trees b/c of cedar-apple rust but.... will they affect crabapples? I want to grow crabs just for the flowers and fragrance- not to eat the crabapples.

Yes, they will affect crabapples too. They will also affect quince and hawthorns if the rust is in the area.

The presence of junipers in my yard wouldn't necessarily keep me from growing any of the various plants which are the alternate host for cedar-whatever rust. Pick rust resistent or tolerant varieties and give it a shot.

Illinois, IL(Zone 5b)

There are several different but closely related rust diseases that predominate on the different alternate-host genera. Cedar-apple rust is the common one, or at least the commonly accused one. All are members of the Gymnosporangium fungus genus, and they all work about the same. Like Mary said, you can usually find resistant selections, and/or spray if needed. I don't worry much about any of them here because we don't try to produce market-quality apples.

Thanks all for the help and advice!
