Arborvitae, mulch or not?

I have the ''Emerald'' Arborvitae and wondered if it was a good idea to put down pine mulch, or let them self mulch over the years? They get morning sun and afternoon Walnut tree shade. Chickweed is the weed problem.

Mulching is nearly always a good practice, for anything, as long as you use good mulch without toxicity problems and control the depth.
