What is this plant?

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

This is a large shrub in a friend's yard. He said it had pink flowers within the last few weeks. Not shown in this picture, unfortunately, were some smaller leaves in clusters beneath larger ones, growing in a similar fashion as seen in Berberis thunbergii. In fact, this shrub reminded me a lot of a barberry except for the large leaves and lack of thorns, and also the recent pink flowers. It also reminded me some of Euonymus. Can anyone peg this one for me? Thanks.

Quince -- probably the common Japanese Chaenomeles.

Really!!! I would have never guessed that! Is this the same flowering quince I see quite often driving around, or is this a different one?

Probably the same one. There are a couple of similar species/hybrids and I don't recall exactly, but you can look the genus up and find out.

I was hoping for an ID on that one--I was certain I had seen that before. DUH--there is only a 12' x 12' plant at my front gate!

You won't be the first plant nut to duh at something right out your window!

There's three species:

Chaenomeles cathayensis - flowers usually white or pink

Chaenomeles japonica - flowers usually red, but can be white or pink

Chaenomeles speciosa - flowers red

Also several garden-origin hybrids and cultivars
