Allison, I got my Brome!!

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

I got my order from http://www.secretgardenrareplants.com/default.cfm today!! I was impressed w/ the size of my Brome 'IT'. IT was packaged very well, looks very healthy, no brown or broken leaves and IT has healthy new growth. IT is in a 4" pot, but is huge! IT's bigger than a dinner plate! I never expected that. I'm going to transplant to a nice clay pot later today. Hoping to have babies soon to send to you, Allison!

I also got some of my 4" pots that I ordered...they are on back order. I'm wondering if that's why my order took so long...maybe they were waiting for their supplier to ship to them. In any case, I got a note that said I'd get the rest of my pots asap. I paid $10 for shipping, my box arrived USPS with a sticker of $11.26, and now they'll have to pay more to ship the other pots. You all were right.

Another thing you were right about is not hearing from them after placing an order. What a shame too. Other than that one thing this has been an awesome experience! If they'd just write their customers telling them their order was received they could be in the WatchDog top 30.

Thanks for recommending this site, I'm so glad I ordered from them. I'm going to post my first Watchdog comment now! =^)

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Ok I had to do it :) I placed an order for some hoyas, and both the cryptanthus :) that I don't have :)
Not to bad a price for all the things I bought either :)

The girl traded with me and sent me the BIG one (with two pup inside that you can see if you look really good) She also send me a large pup :)

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

Lorry, this one is 'IT'. I love that name! I'm having sooo much fun with 'IT'. Way too much fun!! One of the reasons I chose 'IT' was because of the name. LOL

Really, you have Crypts to share? I don't have a lot to trade right now, but you're welcome to what I do have...let me know, or send me a d-mail. I'd love to do a trade!

Allison, I got about 1/4 of my pots. I ordered 200 4" total. That's ok w/ me for right now. As long as I get the other ones w/in about 2 weeks I should be ok. I've been scrounging up butter containers and you name it waiting for these to come, LOL. If I use up what they did send I can use the rest of my butter containers. =^) Makes me appreciate what I have!

I gave this company a positive in the WD. How couldn't I? Besides, you all prepared me for the not hearing from them, so I wasn't worried...but I did make a point to talk about that in my post so others wouldn't worry either. I don't order a lot from places online for plants, but next time I do I'm going back here. They'd also be a GREAT place to get gift certificates at!

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

hehe..I got a couple more pups of the one if you are interested.
I also have pups of this variety

Here is a cascading variety. It sends off runners with pups like a spider plant.
This one is still young and my first one..so no pups yet BUT she has four..count them four runners which almost reach the edge of the pot!

OMG!!! What a beauty. And so big too. I have one that is about the size of a tennis ball but I've never seen one that large. It is absolutely gorgeous. I'm glad you got such a nice plant.

Jesse

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Jesse :) Some are larger growing..some smaller...The one I posted a link to is MUCH larger then a large priority mail box LOL..and I had it perched on one before I repotted :) Some of the others..seem to stay small :)

I agree that IT is incredible :) and it made me run out and order one of my own :)

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh, Lorry! If you were trying to make me drool, you succeded! I need a mop to clean up this mess!

Your stuff is so gorgeous. You've got quite a collection of beauties. If you'd like to do a trade please let me know.

When my Crypt does have pups anyone who wants some can have them...I don't want to start a list now just because I don't know how many pups it'll have. When it does have pups I'll post here right away and they'll be up for grabs. Allison does have the first one, we arranged the trade before either of us purchased anything...ROTFLOL!! I know who comes after her, because you've posted here...but I can't keep a list other than this. Hopefully it'll have babies soon. If you can wait don't buy it, I'll send you babies!! If you can't wait I know how it feels & the prices are too great to pass up! =^)

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

LOL..well right now..I have spikey green and the one I posted a link to.
If you want the pups..You are more then welcome to them Heathr :)

Hopefully I will have pups from some of the others soon :)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Lorry, I was going to Dmail you with this question, but it seemed like information others could use on this thread too...

Would you please share about how to keep crypthathus? How shallow is that big container that they seem to be loving? Do they like it wet, dry, or somewhere in between? I'm assuming the ones in the picture are in regular potting mix with a mulch layer of sand on top - ?

Thanks!

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh, Lorry, thank you so very, very much!! These are for my dh's tropical garden. He *really* isn't into plants, but lived in CA when he was a kid and I'm trying to create something he'll enjoy. He likes the look of Bromes and other tropical looking things. Sometimes what he thinks is tropical isn't, but that's ok.

I don't want to take pups away from someone else tho. If Allison wants these she can have them...you did offer them to her first. Ali, would you like them? I can wait, it's no biggie. I'm just so happy to have someone say they'll share! =^D

What other kind of plants do you like Lorry? I may have something around here that you'd enjoy. I only have NOID AVs, but they are pretty...I have one green/pink vareigated foliage w/ pink flowers. I'd be more than happy to send you some leaves if you'd like.

I do have one Brome pup, but I'm not certain what it even is. I just separated it from it's mama yesterday. Here's a pic. I know it's a common one, but still very pretty!

I have two :) of the one I had the link to. I have the pup ont he side of her available and would still have one for Allison :)
I also have a couple of the green spikey guy so could share that with you and Allison if she wants one :)
I already sent Allison the purply color pup but can save you the next one.
LOVE the brom you just posted..Common or not..she is lovely
I have quite a few bromeliads in my yard :) I just love em

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

I'd love anything you could send me. As soon as this one I have gives off another pup I can send you one. I don't see any more forming and need to know I have another before giving the one I have away...since the mamas die after having pups. (right?)

Bromes always sounded so hard to take care of, then I got this one at Lowe's. It's been soooo easy. For this one you can even forget to water it and it does great. No special lighting either. They are perfect for non-plant people!

If you're in the address exchange I'll look you up and send you out a money order for shipping. How much do you think?

I'm sending you a d-mail

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Lorry, I was looking at some of your photos which are also beautiful and remembered I have a plant that I've not id'd that may or may not be one of these kind. Maybe some of you can help. It might not be like any of yours but if anyone knows what it is I would love to know.

I'd love pups Lorry :))
I am going to get a few plants and more tiny 2 inch pots and pan pots there next month :))

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Lorry you can send Heather ! I never mind waiting. I love the little one you gave me has more than doubled in size ! It's growing in what everything I have grows in lol reg. av soil-less mix ! And everyone is happy !
They are so pretty I like the pink, red ones. I am going to get them next month !

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks Allison, but I think Lorry has enough for us both!! Lorry Rocks!!

When ANY of mine have babies I'll report here first and y'all are the first to get them. You gals are the best!

Jesse, I really don't know what that plant is. LOL! It sure is nifty looking tho. Am I wrong here, or do the leaves (whatever the proper term for them is) look nice and juicy thick like an Aloe would be? Most Bromes I've seen have thin leaves, although they are sturdy and stiff. I just potted up an Aloe yesterday, so maybe that's why I'm thinking that. Mine has the same speckled pattern as Jesse's pic too. I don't know...I could easily be way off. Check out PlantFiles Jesse, do a generalized search for Aloe or what someone else suggests. I think that if you searched Bromes generalized you'd be there for 2 weeks...I did that once! I was looking for this Brome.....it's to die for!! Someday I'll get it, I hope...maybe for my b-day. Ever seen anything like it? The nursery doesn't even know the proper name for it!

That is for sale at http://www.karcheskycanna.com/
on the Dave's Garden part of the site, under Rare Plants. It's listed as a Variegated Pineapple Lily and sells for $12.

So, who's headed there next? LOL

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

Critter,
Here's some of the best info I've found on Bromes, about potting them, etc.
http://www.plantsindesign.com/care_tips.htm#BROMELIADS

At least I hope it's good info, cuz that's what I'm following!! They have 3 different recipes for potting soil for Bromes. One is peat, bark & perlite. They also say that time release fert can be put in the soil. That's what Miracle Gro potting soil contains...the same breakdown. So, that's what I used, rather than mixing up my own. Hopefully I'm not killing my Bromes. I only repotted yesterday, so I really don't have much experience with them in this soil. I don't think 24 hours is enough time to show signs of decline! What the Brome was potted in appeared to be pretty much straight peat w/ very little perlite...pretty much the same as what AVs are potted in from the stores. So, I guess that, if nothing else, gives us a reason for discussing this on the AV forum. LOL!! =^)

Hope that helps!
Heather

Can you find my Bromalaid

Thumbnail by Allison_FL

Lorry,"IT" is a beauty!-Much prettier than "It" on the Adam's family :)
If I knew,I won't kill it,I sure would like to have a pup.

Dillonvale, OH(Zone 6a)

Wow! Those are awesome! I checked out the website heathrjoy got them from... too pricey for my blood right now, but maybe someday!!

IT is beautiful! as are the others!

Janis

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

LOL Allison! That is gorgeous! Do you know it's name?

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

Janis, some are higher priced, but even the low priced ones are terrific. Mine was only $10. I know w/ shipping that brings it up to $20...which makes it a whole other story. But, when you've saved up some pennies stop back there, you won't be sorry!

I'm saving my pennies for my next visit. My problem is I always forget about shipping charges. I tell dh the total and his response is always, "...and shipping is how much?" LOL

Dillonvale, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL I didn't think about it that way.

I'll give it a try :)

you sure have a beauty there. I don't even tell DH anymore. I just try to hide the plant. I am a seed fanatic... that is my weakness... they are much easier to hide LMAO

Janis

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

The bloom above is old it has all purple with the bright pink for months the flower last 10-12 months. But they are large in the garden and have special white stripes my neighbor who collects and know a lot about them told me their names and had asked us for a pup as she can't find them anymore. She has hundreds of rare. She told us the name I forget.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Janis did you see the beauty Eunice's sweet hubby brought her home from Walmart for less than $2.00 ?!!
I love it so she's sending it to me :))
