I planted a "Baby Blue Eyes" blue spruce last October and it appears that the inner part of the tree is turning green. The tips of the branches are still blue. I watered when I thought the soil was drying out over the winter but with heavy clay soils it is hard to judge just when the soil is drying out. Is this a sign of to moist or too dry soil, transplant shock or is it normal for this tree???
Blue Spruce turning Green
It is normal. New growth is very blue; fades to green over time. Only an issue of water if drought seriously retards growth. Also, some sprays can remove the waxy bloom from the needles that gives them the blue color. Only use chemical sprays in worse case scenarios.
Scott
Thanks Scott - I've never really looked at a blue spruce with that in mind. I'll need to do that next time I'm out walking. I'm with you w.r.t. chemicals - only use in worst case.
