Golly gee, gone a few days and this thread is on the second page!
Happy Mother's day, everyone!
Gardening with Texas Native Plants & Wildflowers, part 11.
Josephine--that desert willow is so beautiful I might just have to find it a place of honor in the back. And I like the way its a single trunk....
The read yucca is beautiful.
Debbie
Well, we had Mary Lee her husbad Tom and her son Thomas, come through Arlington last Thursday. We had planned on them arriving around 6 pm. for a visit in the garden and then go out to dinner. But they were not able to leave home till around 5, so they got here much too late for the garden, but we still went out to eat, and had a nice visit with them.
I gave Mary Lee the datura for herself, Debbie, and Mary, two for each, then I found out that Mary is not planning to go to the nursery tour in Austin, so maybe Debbie can pick them up from Mary Lee, and bring them to Mary, since thay both live in Houston.
This is just a suggestion, because I don't know how far away Debbie is from Mary.
In any event, it was sad that they couldn't spend more time with us, maybe net time.
Josephine.
That I can do--where is Mary? Are we talking Silverflutter? We were going to get together as soon as schools out--Austin tour, too many stops for me.
Debbie
Mary Lee is Silverfluter. Mary is Maggiemoo. All of these Marys get confusing, don't they? LOL
~ Marylyn
But you're all such wonderful people--the more Mary's...the merrier!
thanks Debbie. Yes I guess the Mary's are confusing. I hadn't thought about that. I was confused by the Sheila/ Sylvia thing. When I was in grade school there was me, a Mary Ann, a Mary Helen, a Mary Lou and a Mary - all in the same class. The teacher went nuts.:) She learned real quick which one I was though, because I was always in trouble for talking.:)
BTW the visit with Josephine was really nice and a very welcome break from driving. Thanks very much Josephine, and the plants are fine. They weathered the trip better than we did in fact.
You girls arrange it whichever way works out best.
Mary Lee I am glad you are safely home and the plants made it too.
Josephine.
So the oldtimers knew what this native plant was good for! And I didn't know until I saw something about this at the Festival of Flowers this weekend.

I have a huge beautyberry as tall as the house (one story-east exposure), interesting link. Also another out front in the shade..
That is very interesting Linda, yet another good use for a wonderful plant.
Josephine.
Alright guys here is a problem - DW is helping plan out the newest bed - no problems untill she is wanting some bigger grasses for the back... any idea on Native grasses / shrubs that would work in this full sun area? There is room for four 4x10 or so grasses ... she was thinking Mithacus (did I spell that right?) Morning Light and I said lets go more native... soooo what are good tall native grasses that can be found (source would be nice too!) with out digging them out of the wild..........? Any ideas?
Gulf coast muhly is beautiful backlit in the late summer by sunlight. Not real tall though (
Mitch, check out these three, they look good.

Love them - now to get her to love them too!
Ohhhhhhhhh - I love the look of your place - so green and lush... One day . . . .
Josephine; I vote for the back gate. I'm coming through...lol. Very inviting..next RU swap at your house? :)
I could see it there... what do you think?
We can wear her down Mitch...lol
Got this lovely skullcap (to replace a millionbells which I promptly killed within a week...not native..think I'll ever learn?) at Joshua's with Marylyn Saturday and this lovely moose Sunday from my child.
My contribution to native plants today. Only 5 days to go....(gulp).
Well Debbie and Mitch, I would love to have it here, but we really cannot accomodate a large group, I am afraid that we could only have a max of 20 people, and if more people want to come, how can we say we have no room them?
I would feel very bad having to limit the number of people that can attend, especially if it rained then we would have to bring it all inside the house since we don't have a covered patio, and there really isin't enough room.
I think at some other time, we could have a small get together, I just don,t think it is fair to put a limit on the attendance.
I am sorry guys.
Josephine.
Would love to have anything over there - just love to look over there!
What a cute moose, Debbie!!
Yes Debbie, that is adorable.
I got a book I had wanted for a while, The Flora of North Central Texas, so I have a lot of learning to do.
Josephine.
Thanks Marylyn and Josephine...and I haven't killed my skullcap yet either.
Hi all, it's been a hectic week! Yes, Debbie, Mary is me, Mary Lee is silverfluter, lol.
I'm sure Debbie and I will be able to get together sometime this summer, maybe we can have a gathering of West-side Houstonians (even though I'll be driving down from the North, lol.)
I was traveling in Cypress Tuesday and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw what had to be two Daturas in a front yard, one on either side of a mailbox. It was around noon, and they were in bloom, looked positively beautiful! Could they be Datura if they were blooming during the day?
Mine bloom all day when we have cloud cover.
Maggie--if we do an arbor gate run we all drive somewhat. Marylyn and I found out we can do some real damage together...almost dangerous. April will come too, I'm sure.
Hello Mary, good to hear from you, like Sheila said, if it is cloudy and cool they stay open much longer.
Josephine.
Iit was a partly cloudy day, but it was also cooler than usual (yea!), so I think it must have been the Datura. I now know where I want to plant mine.
Debbie, that sounds like fun. Have you ever been to Arbor Gate?
I've taken to letting a few things grow that pop up in some of my beds, just to see what they are, to see if I might actually want them. I'll post a couple of pics tomorrow, I'm sure someone can tell me what they are.
Loved your slope pictures, Josephine. I know there was a question I was going to ask you about it, thought of it several days ago, but I can't remember now. It's driving me crazy! :-(
Yes Maggie but kind of thought it would be sorta central to all.
One day real soon I'm making a trip up to ARE and Frazier's by the 6 to Navasota turn off. I have just got to have more yard art (got my eyes on one of those "sea serpents" that come in parts you put in the grass--I swear the older I get, the sillier I get--I'm sure the lawn mowing guys will quit in revolt) if anyone might be interested in keeping me company. I'm open to any day after next Friday...lol
Well guys, I finally got some pictures of the native roses I planted this Spring.
I took the pictures at the wildscape, my are not blooming yet.
The Cherokee rose is a climber and is naturalized.

The Prairie rose is a shrub and is native.
http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/64875/index.html
I think it is very pretty, we shall see hoe it behaves for me.
The swamp rose is a native climber also.

Isin't it neat?
Nice roses....makes me wish I wasn't too tired to quote a little Shakespeare. The old, native roses almost makes me think about how they (or similar species) must have inspired people for at least the last 700 years.
