I've been lurking around here a couple of weeks and have really enjoyed the pictures and information. I started my lily addiction last spring and have added 50 more to my garden this year. I know that's not very many to some but I am also addicted to daylilies so I have to split my gardening budget between the 2. I mostly grow oriental and trumpet lilies because I LOVE the fragrance but I do have a few LA and asiatics in my garden.
I look forward to getting to know you all and learning from this great group of folks.
Kelly
New here - Hi!
Well... we don't allowing lurking in this forum ~ so jump right in! There are some real smart cookies around and lots of us that are still learning.
Welcome!
Hi Kelly and welcome to the Lily Forum!!! I'm one of the ones that's still learning. You'll find everyone here is so helpful!
Steve
Welcome to the board Kelly
I'm also new (and I have fewer lilies but don't tell anybody) I find the people here incredibly helpful and friendly. Some day I'll start a new thread to just say thank you to everyone.
Enjoy all the attention!
Welcome Kelly,
I've tried to be a lurker, but it just doesn't work! So....just jump right in and make yourself comfortable. Oh, by the way, I'm still learning also.
Everyone is still learning.
Welcome, Kelly!
Thank you all for the warm welcome! I've already made a horse's rear end out of myself on another thread so I guess I won't have to worry about you all having high expectations. ;o)
Geeze, nothing like making a good first impression LOL
Hi, another lily lover! great, join right in. I don't have that many either, maybe 50-60 varieties but those mamas keep multiplying, think there's over 130 total. Orientals are my favorite, mostly because of the fragrance, but also cuz they were the first lilies I had and they can be challenging stinkers sometimes. That makes them fun!
I don't even have close to 50 varieties......*counting*...I only have 8. Which is better then last year when I only had 3. I would have had 9 different types but Oriental 'White Horse' is MIA, and I'm thinking it's a little late for him to come up still. I think I might have killed it myself when I was planting other bulbs. And Kelly, don't worry if you felt silly over your other thread....we all do that! :D
Steve
Well, stick around DG for awhile - three years ago I had 3, now look what happened!
Oh dear, I didn't mean to give the impression that I planted 50 varieties this spring. I planted 50 bulbs of 6 different varieties. They were:
Oriental:
Paramount, Tom Pounce, Stargazer & Bergamo
Trumpet:
Regal & Amethyst Temple
I apologize for the confusion.
That's ok, I was actualy looking at kooger who said they had 50-60 varieties. But it's nice to see I'm not the only one who only has a few different types :D I'm trying scale propagation though, to increase my numbers.
Steve
Either way, MB ~ 50 bulbs is a lot to plant!
hmm...I have about 24 bulbs, 10 varieties and I am feeling seriously insecure about it :)
oh viq, you must certainly get more lilies!!! ha ha ha! You can never have too many!
Hi Kelly,
Welcome to DG and to the lily forum. I am new here as well and only just started my lily addiction last year. I have about 12 different varieties. I planted some of the bulbs this spring and they are doing fantastic. This group is chalk full of information and beautiful pics so beware you will be creating a long list of lily wants soon.
Michelle
About the time the pictures start showing up, Your list starts getting longer! Unless, of course, you went back to last year's pics and have already started lily lusting for the year! Of course, I just go back to get a fix for my full blown addiction :-)
OK, guys, When I went to plant the Oriental Little John, two of the bulbs had the stems snapped off. I just sent Neal some of the scales, but there's lotz more. If you interested, let me know and I'll get them to you. I just don't have the room to grow that many bulbs. Some of the scales I have going now have two and three bublets attached.
Me, Me, Me! You can take the postage off the cost of ur box! :)
Already on the way to you, Kooger. Don't worry about the postage. Very happy with the plants you sent. OK, I'll put you down for scales, but I'm going to wait and see if there are any others, so I can mail all at the same time.
More about Little John. Dwarf Oriental, suppose to be 18" and blooms earlier than the other orientals. I'm guessing, once established, about when the LAs or Trumpets bloom. The color listed is light lavender, but it looks pink to me. We'll have to wait and see.
OH, I have been drooling for Little John since I saw it in the Park's cataloge. If I'm not too new to join in, I would dearly love to have a scale or two. If you'd rather get to know me better first, I totally understand.
This is such a great place. Thanks again to you all for your warm welcome!!!

Not a problem, Mud_Blood and fellow Harry fan. I've got you down. This isn't going to cost you anything. Make sure you put your address in the address exchange.
Any other takers? I could prorably handle 2 or 3 others. I am not asking for postage or trade. Too piddley to worry about. Besides, people have been so generous with me, it's just a small way to repay that with others.
Beaker, I'd like to try Little John, and I'm sure you find something to your liking if you come over in June 11 (or any time). Don't know what the address exchange is, so I'll send you a D-mail.
Rick
I'm planning on being there in June, Rick. I got a bare root Knockout rose as a gift, but really don't want it, so I've potted it up for your plant swap. I also have some iris, zulu prince daisies, early grey larkspur, some columbine and a few others I'll be bringing along. I was going to ask you, can I bring a friend and can I bring Reggie my old Westie (leashed, of course)?
I use to live out in Maple Plain a looong time ago on Cty Rd 6 on a place called Windsong Farms. I think there was a place we'd go to breakfast in St Boni once in awhile. Just a hole in the wall. Is that the area you are in or is there another St Boni elsewhere?
I'll add you to the list for scales. Address Exchange - Go to Home and click on Extras. You'll find it there, if you want to use it.
Hooray!!! I'm in the address exchange. Now I need to brush up on how to propagate from scales. I've read about it but never actually done it.
Thank you Beaker! Thank you so very much!!
Kelly *doin a happy dance*
Well, to start, it's very simple. Simply throw some slightly damp (slightly!)dirt in the little baggie your scales will come in, mix them up a bit and throw the baggie under a pile of magazines (as I do) and forget about them for a month. When you run across them again, you should see little white bublets beginning to grow. Check the dirt, it dry, mist a bit. Throw them back under the mags for another month. You should now be seeing roots. Plant them out, scale and all. Because these are orientals, I plan on bringing these in in the fall to winter over in the frig. Then back out again in the spring.
Oh dear, but with that method, that means we have to clean house once in awhile so that we can find them again. I don't know if that's possible, it's gardening time u know? LOL
LMBO I know exactly what you mean. I'm thinking if I put them under gardening magazines, I'll come across them sooner than anywere else. hehe
Forgive a newbie but this is so exciting!
OK, so we all rely on Steve to remind us (SW_gardener). He has some going and he seems to be very conscience about his propagation. Obviously, someone else cleans his house. LOL, I had completely forgotten about the scales I had going until he made a report on his and I found them under a pile of magazines. I don't think that was where I intended this to happen, but they seemed happy there, so that's back where they went. I told him to remind me next time he checked his. However, I did just look and I've got some nice fat roots going. These are from a mystery bulb I found half eaten in my garden this spring using the tiny inside scales. Worked like a charm.
Beaker, Kelly - I checked my scales the other day and they are coming great, it's so exciting to see them growing. Some of the scales have more then one bulblet growing too. My first batch is ready at the end of this month and my second batch is going to be ready at the beginning of July. I keep my bags of scales on a shelf right inside my small closet. I still haven't figured out WHERE I'm going to plant them though. I'll have enough 'Shocking' to start my own buisness :D
Steve
Isn't that the truth! That's why I'm trying to find a home for all these scales. Inanda said she takes a scale or two off of each bulb she plants. She must have an entire bed just devoted as a nursery.
Oh, BTW, a tip from Inanda that I forgot to mention above. She soaks all of her scales in a 10% Clorox solution (or hydrogen peroxide) for 30 minutes. Actually, she soaks all of her bulbs before planting. She said it's to discourage any hiychhikers such as Japanese Beetles.
I suppose I could offer scales to some of my friends....I think they might take them.........or they might look at them and say 'What the heck is that? Will it ever grow?'
So I should soak my scales before I plant them in the garden? In either 10% Clorox or 10% hydrogen peroxide? I just want to make sure I've got it right :D
Steve
Oh thanks for the tip. I soak my daylilies but I never thought to soak my bulbs. Dont know why, it makes perfect sense.
The bulbs before planting, the scales before putting them in the baggie to grow bulblets. All I've been doing with the scales is putting them in a little bowl of tepid water (not hot/not cold) and I pour in hydrogen peroxide until I see bubbles working. Let them soak for 30 minutes and then into the baggie with some dirt. From there, someplace dark, like under a pile of magazines. Inanda has noted that the bulblets appear to form faster if some light pressure is applied to the scale, but not in those words. Actually, she was wondering why the scales on the bottom of her growing box formed bulblets faster than the ones on top. I assume that it has something to do with firmer contact with the growing medium. Under a pile of magazines works for me.
I'm going to put something on top of my scales right away! Next time I'll remember to soak them.
Thanks,
Steve
When I did my latest bag of scales(May 1st) I used the whole bulb on the ones where the stem was busted off, so I just tossed the 'heart' of the bulb into the bag too, and now I just checked them and the 'hearts' are sprouting leaves!!! So, cause of the leaves I decided not to put anything on top of them, for fear they might get broken.
Steve
You might want to pull that one out and pot it up.
It doesn't have much if any roots on it.....would that be alright?
Steve
I would think so. It doesn't really matter where it sets roots; in a baggie or a pot. If it's putting out leaves, I doubt if it will put out a bulblet as it's already one.
