Wow Allison. That is so beautiful. You did a super job with that one.

Thanks I grow them all by leaf.
Even when I buy plants I tear them apart putting down leaves sharing leaves. Almost always the plant I grow by leaf in my enviroment is a nicer plant .

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I do the same thing Allison, take the leaves off of them when I get them home, to use to make new babies. Howerver, I would like to grow some of the larger ones and maybe use the little rings that you got to make them really big and bushy and stand out better. Other than the Space babies, what other plants are considered Large?

Jesse, Take a look at the Optimara Identification sight. They have several large varieties. I have found that the Optimara varieties are a little more hardy. As Lorry says, they are a little more forgiving of the care you give them.

When you go to a sight to look for plants, the discription will tell you if it is a large standard. The large plants that I have had success with are Raspberry Rampage. Optimara Mississippi, O. Michigan, Pretty Miss Kelly, Ma's Debutante. Each of them was over 14 inch in diameter. The leaves of Music Box Dancer, B Man's Etna, and Buckeye's Bouquet that I am growing right now look large. When the plants are ready to seperate I would be happy to share with you. I have plantlets of Pretty Miss Kelly right now and suckers are growing on Ma's Debutants.

Jesse
When you get your First Class there is a catorgory for all sizes one which is Large ! In FC there are almost three thousand African violets that grow Large !.
A lot of the B-mans grow large one for example
B-Man's Alessio (8652) 07/21/1997 (B. Curcuruto) Double medium pink ruffled pansy/green-edged top petals. Medium green, spooned, glossy, serrated. Large
>>
B-man's Etna and Cosimo are not on the large list but I grow them both and they do grow large I think.
Most of the Buckeye's grow large.
My Guelph's Christmas is and grow large !
Guelph's Christmas (9120) 04/20/2002 (J. Brownlie/Guelph University) Semidouble-double fuchsia large frilled star/thin white-green edge. Medium green, quilted, glossy, wavy, serrated/red back. Large
>>>
Plain and Fancy (2756) 11/13/1975 (E. Champion) Double pink ruffled star. Variegated, plain, quilted. Large
I grow grows large...
There are several Optimaras other than space babes in FC that grow large and some of the Rhapsodie series. Wrangler's grow large...just a few of the almost three thousand just in FC :))
I bet you have a lot of plants now that grow large already !

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Jesse is you get to go to a show it would be fun ! You see plants 24 inches across all perfect rows and covered with zillions of flowers !
This one lady grew " ANN " that would make you faint a good 24 inches across and rows and rows of perfect foliage and zillions of leaves. That's when I fell in love with " Ann"
Ann (6649) 06/01/1987 (B. Bryant) Double rose-pink frilled/two-tone center, edge. Variegated dark green, white, some pink, longifolia, quilted, cupped, glossy, ruffled. Large
Nanna does you Optimara Mississippi grow large ??
As FC says ; Optimara Mississippi (6576) 05/25/1987 (Holtkamp) Single white/dark pink frilled edge. Medium green, plain, glossy. Standard
and
Optimara Mississippi II (8966) 01/31/2001 (Holtkamp) Semidouble bright pink/white frilled edge. Medium-dark green, plain, glossy, hairy, scalloped/red back. Small standard
... But then again I have the two B-man's that I have shared several sets of leaves and babies of and they are growing large and FC has them as a standard. I think Large is over 16 inches ?? and up 24 inches Yikes.
I have two large plants now taking a whole 2 ft. by 2 ft shelf. and they have rings. And I can't beleive their this large as i've taken so many sets of leaves off and given so many babies away but they kept growing.
Jesse I think it would be fun to grow a couple real big ! I think you have to trans-plant them a lot for one thing ...

Silver Spring, MD

Yes, Allison. My Mississippi was about 18 inches across. I loved her. Shared her with everyone on my street. Jill had one as well. But i lost her. The last batch of leaves did not grow and I lost the mother plant. I had her about 5 years. Some say that is a good time for a violet. But, I have a friend who has had one live for over 25 years now.

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

OMG! I would be so excited to have a plant grow to that size. How fun that would be. I do have Michigan, which nanna said grows large. I have never seen an AV that big and I sure would love to. I wish I could go to one of those shows. My eyes would probably pop out of my head from all the staring I would be doing. That is really big, 2' by 2'. I will dream of one of those and maybe one day I will have one. I also have B-Man's Cosimo. I hope that will get really large for me. And I have several in the Rhapsodie series.

So how have those rings that you bought worked for you so far Allison. Do you like them? I was waiting to see how you like them before I get some, and also waiting for my plants to get bigger. I want to take a trip to Bluebird's so bad but I'm waiting for some money to come in. Once that does, I am going to Bluebird's. I like going there so that I can look at the plants in person and know exactly what I am getting.

That is a long time to have a plant. I did not know that they lasted that long. I'm sorry that you lost your plant. I hope that you can find another one that you can grow for such a long time, maybe 30 years. That would be really cool.

I bought a few of those rings Jesse from Violet barn as I have a few plants with big heavy foliage. One is my Russian Snow Leopard and I want to grow it nice looking and the heavy leaves were hanging over and down. It seems to like the ring very much ! And my Guelph's Christmas (9120) 04/20/2002 (J. Brownlie/Guelph University) Semidouble-double fuchsia large frilled star/thin white-green edge. Medium green, quilted, glossy, wavy, serrated/red back. Large
was getting bigger and needed one. They both seem happy so I am glad I am trying them. I wanted to try them a couple years ago but a guy at local group said don't waste my money. Now the eleastics that come with them to help fit the pots are thick and heavy. Next day I woke to find them broken and leaf suport no longer working. So I rigged it with the masonaery string so now I can use them !.
I think I sent you B-man's Cosimo ? I know I sent you a lot of minis/semis but maybe I sent some more large. I hope your FC comes soon I bet you have a lot of large growing plants !
I fount this on the AVSA sight. They have all information you could think of and then some ! And if you don't find your answer after reading everything you can ask a question ~ I fount this interesting
Question: I have an Afriacn Violet that is 20" across and the roots are growning out the bottom of the pot. It is in a 5" pot now. Why are the roots comming out the bottom? I repotted it about 3 months ago. I have noticed a lot of my plants are doing the same thing. Thank you for your help. The flowers have been so enjoyable and this one plant I have had for 26 years.
>>>
Answer: The roots may be growing out the bottom because it is a little too wet (which usually means that the plants are not doing well overall) or because the roots are developing so amply that they are seeking more space (plants are thriving). Since it sounds like you are having great success, I would just enjoy it. You are doing a good job. Typically, it will not harm the violets to remove these excess roots if they are unsightly. You could perhaps pot the violet up to a six inch pot, but it isn't really necessary unless you wish to show it in an AVSA judged show. It will enjoy the tight pot and bloom more heavily. Happy Growing! Joyce Stork

Can you imagine 26 years ! I wanted to post this earlier but then my CNA was here over an hour.
According to all I have read everyone says don't use a pot larger than 4 inches except if you are showing. But what if you want to grow a large plant show material just for fun ! Then I say go for it :))
I have a few plants in 5 inch azela pots that were tight even after trimming in 4 inch now they are very happy !
WOW Nanna superb ! Mississippi was about 18 inches across aweseom growing .. They say miniatures 4-6 inches, Semi-miniatures 6-8 inches standards 8- what inches ?
Large is a whole different catorgory with almost 3,000 in FC alone. When is it concidered a Large acording to AVSA standards ? I have been reading and reading and have not fount my answer yet.

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, you did send me B-Man's Cosimo and it is doing great. I am going to be taking some new updated photos soon and I'll take one of him so that you can see how well he is doing. I think I will order a few of the supports from Rob and I definitely need to repot the ones that are in those very deep self-watering pots. None of mine that I have grown in them has done well. At one point, I had EverGrace looking really good until I put it in one of those so I"m getting ready to move it to a 5" pot. Those really big ones need that extra bit of room I think.

I'd like t get a few more rings. I l also need to get some more of his 6 inch hanging pts for some of my Epsicas. I like the 5 inch Azeal pots.
