did you hear the morning glory news?

Coshocton, OH(Zone 6a)

This morning on our local news broadcast, it was stated that morning glory seeds are being pulled off the seed racks because kids are eating them to get high.
Honestly, what is next?

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Datura seeds, gasoline, furniture polish, spray paint------bored kids will try anything to get a buzz. Wonder if this was a problem back when there were chores to do and they had to work hard to make a few bucks to buy things?

The Ipomoea tricolor must be processed a certain way that few,if any 'kids' have learned how to do correctly and just eating the seeds won't get them high, but will just make them puke...taking the seeds off of the shelves just contributes to and perpetuates the myth>that just eating them will get you high...the seeds should stay on the shelves...the kids who eat them will NOT get high>and then the story on the streets will be the same as it is in the New York Metropolitan area, and that is that kids WON'T bother with them because they don't know how to prepare them properly, and they just make you puke...

The Ipomoea hederacea,Ipomoea nil and Ipomoea purpurea do not contain hallucinogenic compounds and have been used historically as rough purgatives...again any kids eating them will not get high,or die,but will just puke their guts out...what better way to stop themselves(!) and any others from eating MG seeds...

There was a write up on Brugs a while back. Kids were ripping out plants to boil the stems to get high. There lucky they didnt die! Like Ron said just puked their guts out. I say leave them where they are... a few lame-its will try it but Im sure only once!!

I heard the same thing from my neighbor about salvias being regulated in Delaware because of the purported hallucinogenic effects of S. divornum. I haven't seen any report on this in the paper however.

Dundee, OH(Zone 5b)

that report has also circulated around Ohio for the past 5 years and still I see them everywhere commercially for sale, I think it's just a rumor here (for them being pulled), but kids will try anything so you just never know!

I work as a nurse on an adolescent psych unit and we find that teens don't have to look very far to find information on using MJ seeds or other hallucinagenic plants. The information is all over the web. With so many places selling untreated Heavely Blue Morning Glory seeds by the pound, I don't think all of them are being grown for the flowers.

Yes,Susan you're right, not all of those seeds are being used to grow flowers, but that doesn't mean that the seeds are being directly eaten by kids either...The seeds are often used by chemists for the LSA content as a convenient precursor to convert it to the much more potent LSD...Then again a basic substance such as indole, which is present in about 99.9% of all plants is also easily converted to just about any pychoactive substance...There is no getting around it...since the scare tactics sometimes used often backfire and result in greater distrust, and I don't believe in 'burning books' or people(!),I believe that realistic honest education is the best response...

I'm not suggesting that there needs to be any regulation on MG seeds Ron. There are so many hallucinagenic plants that there is no way all could be regulated and it would not do any more good than trying to keep Meth and other drugs from kids has done by making them illegal, I just think people do need to be aware of the danger and that there is a lot of information out there that is not at all hard to find.
