I planted seeds of Altroemeria ligtu (the species as opposed to the hybrids) in late November. Now the first plant is blooming. Spectacular! The entire plant is only 5 inches tall! I have 4 plants so I will risk planting one outside but the rest will overwinter in the basement.
Had to share this
What a beauty! I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for the one you place outdoors. --Ginny

That is gorgeous!

Lovely. Thanks for sharing with us. Joan
wow, nice what a warm color.
Todd, that is a beauty! When I enlarged the photo, it struck me that I would love a print of that exact photo. Would be a knockout. Good luck with the plants. BAM
Oh my! What a gorgeous flower Todd!
edited to say the ones I've noticed in the greenhouses here are so plain compared to your beauty.

Great picture Todd. Such a nice deep colour, even if it's orange.
New to me and quite an attractive flower. Excellent clarity in the photo Todd. Is this plant a bulb? Was it tough to start from seed?

I sowed the seeds at about 20-25 C and they germinated in about 4 weeks. It does have a bit of a tuberous root and will disappear for a few months after it blooms when it should be kept dry. I really know little about their cycle....it is suppose to be a bit complicated so I will have to do research now in order to keep it going. I have another species I grew from seed at the same time called A. pelegrina...a pink-flowered type. Some buds fell off so I am doing something wrong with that one. One plant still has one bud so I am hopeful I will get to see what that one is like. It is also quite short.
I also grew A. pallida, sown in May and flowered in October. That plant is taller and quite gangly so I am not as impressed but the flower is still lovely.
I'm thinking Todd loves a challenge, lol. Another nice one there.
Good luck with your Alstroemeria pelegrina!
Todd, your A. pallida is so delcate looking, it's beautiful. Great photo too.
Wow... Once again I am strucked by the beauty of natural flowers opposed to hybrids. Hybrids are bigger but lack the .
Great photo Todd!!! The flower has such amazing colouring!
