I'm curious about how long it takes for a Dove Tree to "do its thing." I have had mine for a few years now and this year it got its first handkerchief! I'm assuming that once it starts, it will pick up speed across the next few years. Is that accurate?
Dove Tree
Yes, from what I've seen, once it becomes established on a 5+ year old tree it will start to pick up. Typically the first set of blooms are small/deformed/poor. The more summer watering you give it, the better.
Interesting you should say that. Mine isn't that old yet, is grafted so I assume supposed to bloom a bit earlier than otherwise, but just got the one "bract," i.e. one lonely dove. I find that it demands a great deal of water in the summer or it dries out quickly. Any idea why that is? Does the extra watering seem to increase the next year's bloom?
Is Dove Tree another common name for Davidia involucrata?
Yep, Davidia involucrata. I believe this tree is from a fairly high elevation that remains coolish during the summer and constant moisture.
