I tried to dig up the old thread about the dead lawn society but could not find it. This is a picture I took on a walk today, this yard has almost no grass. It is all trees and shrubs. This would be my ideal yard.
grass free yard
Mine too, escambia!
Remember the sand yards that folks used to have- espec. here in the South? I'd have a very small patch of grass at my back door and the rest of the yard in sand, flower beds and trees! I'm well on my way in the tree part. I can still see in my minds eye my Granny "sweeping" her white sand yard. She'd rake it first with a rake to remove branches and leaves and then she'd use an old broom to smooth it out.
I'm almost there!Front yard, live oaks, beds for shade lovers and a small sunny area.Back yard, was more weeds than grass but now there is almost no grass.I just keep on making beds and I'm almost there. One or two seasons at the most and there will be none.
The yard in the picture is mostly southern pines, water oaks, and sweetgums. American hollies, azaleas, and red cedars in the understory. I can never achieve this look because of a darn powerline that runs straight across my yard.
