How long can I hold hybrid poplar cuttings in water?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Greetings ~

I got them Th and put them in water Th night with the intention of planting this weekend. Due to unforseen circumstances, they may have to wait for me to come back from a business trip about mid week. It's been 4 days and they are already sprouting and most have 1/4 in roots. From what I've read on the internet, as long as they have water, they seem to be pretty indestructible.

Thanks! Karla

If you let those new roots get any longer in water most will break off when planted or not adapt well to being transferred from water to soil. How many cuttings are there? If nothing else, can you pot them up and outplant them later after the roots are well established in the pots?

I guess I won't ask why you're growing those awful hybrid poplars instead of native cottonwoods or other native trees, but I hope you have a very good reason (and I hope you didn't actually pay anyone for the hybrids).

Greetings ~

We have about 75 cuttings. Some are in the ground now. Probably get 5-10 in the ground a day until they're done. We are looking to "wind break" 300 ft of fence (more than 100 ft from well, septic & the like) from 30-50 MPH summer winds. Since these were cheap enough to be considered free and look like they can take some abuse (and abuse they will get here in the high desert), it seemed reasonable. The local university did a study on this particular cultivar and it seemed to survive reasonably well here. That being said, I hope we are not planting "a lifetime of headache". With an average of less than 10" of rain a year though, almost anything that isn't irrigated dies a pretty instant death when summer comes :-)

We also "pruned" some "what look like cottonwoods" from near the local lake which will hopefully root soon.

Thanks for the info!
