Sambucus nigra 'Black Beauty'

Bel Air, MD(Zone 6b)

Seller claims that this is a great companion for 'Sutherland Gold', but SG seems to like shade, while BB seems to need more sun. I need one for pretty much full light shade under my pin oak and one will get a bit of sun until about 1pm.

I just bid on these on E-bay. Did I make a mistake? Hope someone can put me straight before they arrive.

Thanks, Lesley

Both are excellent choices. I keep seeing photos of that 'Black Beauty' and it's a beauty all right. Me, I'd plant them and experiment.

Thanks, Equilibrium. I think I'll do just that. Black Beauty seems to be a hot item. I've already been outbid. I plan to do the 'dive in at the end' routine and see whether I can get it.

Companion as in what? Maybe they mean they would look good together. They certainly will not cross pollinate each other so you will not get berries when they do flower.

Are you aware of how large they both grow? If SG likes the shade, you might pair it with snakeroot/bugbane also called Hillside Black Beauty, which does Ok in partial shade.

Hey kiwigal, I saw 'Black Beauty' at Menards of all places. I almost bought it. If you have a Menards anywhere around you, why not give them a call. I about did a few fancy back steps when I saw those at the Menards. They were cheap too.

I've seen Black Beauty in gallons for $5.50 locally, but ...................I found Black Lace for $10 for my find of the spring.
